So I have a dilemma. I am not really a music guy. Know next to nothing about sound systems and generally I prefer a quiet environment at home so I have never owned a home sound system. I may listen to the radio in the car but that is as far as it goes. My wife on the other hand loves her music and listens at home but mainly from her phone's crappy speaker playing via youtube or something off our wifi.

Her birthday is coming up and I want to try get her something nicer that will improve sound quality/volume and let her listen in the house. The advice I am looking for is which way do I go? I know there are mini hifi's around. Also these new speakers that you can plug a phone into that I have seen advertised. Any other solutions would be welcome.

My other issue is that I do not have a large budget as we are as always in a bit of a tight financial spot due to on-going medical challenges so anything under R1000 perhaps R1500 max is what I am looking at. If it can play via Bluetooth or wifi it would help. We also have a laptop at home that could be part of the solution but phone is probably preferable.

Bluetooth speaker is the way to go and its portable and can be moved around as well.

I have a Volkano Blaster, its not the best out there but it is still very good. Speakers on one side and an active sub on the other side.
The edges are covered in a thick rubber and it has a nice leather carry strap. Supports Bluetooth, FM, SD Card , Aux-In and its not too pricey. You can always test it out before hand and see if it is to your liking.

My place is setup with Sonos speakers. It's a wifi solution - they just need AC power. You can buy various grades of speaker, or hook up any other speakers to Sonos Amps wirelessly, control the sound from a phone app (volume, which speakers play what, etc.). The sound quality is great (as a non-audiophile), and you can expand it as you need/can afford it (I.e., start with one Play:1 speaker and then eventually set up one or two in all your rooms to get music everywhere).

Thanks guys. Will dig a bit on the recommendations. The sound bar looks a bit big and seems more for TV sound correct? Was looking for something smaller that could be unobtrusive in my lounge but have the sounds carry to the kitchen which is connected.

Best thing i ever bought was Plantronics BT headhpones or others, use them almost everyday.

Phone in the pocket and headphones on you don't even notice they are there.
Use mine when I gym and when i do house work like painting etc.

I considered headphones but the wife is not keen. We have kids etc and she does not want to feel cut off from them. Also music in the house is nice to share. If needed we have some earphones that came with the phone etc.

sonos is the way to go

if you want a cracker bluetooth speaker for a good price - the jbl charge 3 is awesome!
