Need to buy a router

Sorry d7e7r7, I should've mentioned that it is indeed possible to access the router from via the Internet or via its WiFi AP, but those options are disabled by default since it's security risk.

So to setup the router initially, you HAVE to use the LAN cable.

Why do you want to access it via the web though? Huge security risk. Exactly how people used to "hack" ADSL accounts !
 
Question for the helpful people on this thread: I'm currently using the Mecer router I got free from my ISP. I'm randomly experiencing a known Steam problem - "refreshing server list causes internet to hang" - which they say is caused by a router being overwhelmed by pings from all the servers. They suggest a couple of fixes, which haven't really worked, otherwise as a last resort getting a better router.

Can I safely assume the D-Link routers will not have this problem? The 2760U is the one I'm thinking of getting.

Not sure, but MEcer Routers are possibly the worst I've ever seen. :p
 
OnePingOnly: if you have a 384kbps or perhaps even 512kbps ADSL line, then you might experience problems when refreshing server lists with Steam, because it was designed for 1st world countries that has fast broadband connections.
The worst game network wise that I've played so far was Call of Duty:Black Ops. On a 4Mbps connection that games runs like a dream, but it's very problematic on a 384kbps line.

I use a Keepass database to store and generate all my passwords so not too worried about someone cracking the password...
If it is such a security risk I guess I can leave it disabled and use Teamviewer instead when I am away from PC...

On the topic of hacking, it amazes me how many people don't change their routers default passwords :eek:
A quick search using specific software lists all routers with default passwords > telnet in > "show all" > ADSL username and password revealed in plain text... :wtf:
 
d7e7r7: enabling the web access from the Internet on an ADSL modem is pretty much pointless, because it is completely separate from accessing your LAN PC's from the Internet, and there's not much that you would want to change on an ADSL modem in any case.
If you had like a MikroTik/DD-WRT capable router, then it would be nice to allow web access, but I prefer not to enable it since I like to VPN in to the MikroTik router first :)

It is really scary to see the amount of hacking attempts on web & SSH servers. 99% of the attacks on my office's web servers are brute force IP attacks (seeing that they don't know the hostname of the server) where they try to run the phpMyAdmin setup script.
Leaving SSH on port 22 isn't a good idea either, unless you have a very strong password. We simply changed our SSH port and the attacks completely disappeared.
 
Thanks for the advice, guys. Pada, I'm on a 1024 line so I think it's more likely the router that's giving the problem.
