Afrihost and Axxess apparently run on the MtnBusiness-backbone ( biggest lot of crap i've ever seen ). Can someone put me on the right direction to a service that DOESNT run on Mtnbusiness as a backbone?

...thx folks

The current problems Afrihost have isn't due to MTN backbone, but IPC. MTN is not your problem

What is the actual problem that you are having with Afrihost/MTN Business?

Towards the middle of the article, they discuss the major ISPs and their backbone
http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/84289-uncapped-adsl-fair-usage-policy-comparison.html

TBH...I was at previous ISP's that didnt use MtnBusiness, and it use to fly. Then i went to an UNCAPPED account...even MORE disastorous (throttling at about 19 gig, etc etc). After about 3 months, i decided to call it a day and joined Afrihost for a CAPPED account...Immediatly i saw a decline (not much) with their backbone compared to other isps with diff backbones...but it wasnt a major trainsmash...except NOW!
(started a couple of days ago)

PS: you just need to look above at my "tracert"-results...and youll get the picture...

Something does not add up. Capped accounts are unshaped. So you shouldn't really have any problems. If you do, it could be your exchange, or a technical glitch on Afrihost's side. PM Afriman.

Looks like your issue may be with exchange congestion than anything else. Connect with the Telkom guest account and do a traceroute and see what those results are like.

Pakka is correct. Telkom holds every ISP to ransom with their stupid IPC and there seems to be no competition or end in sight of this obvious bottleneck.

If you read all the threads in the ADSL ISP forums then you'll notice that there's not really an ISP without it's own set of problems.

Web Africa and Plugg will force you do most of your bandwidth in 25% of the day (00:00 till 06:00) with their star systems.

Openweb will require you to refresh your account and overcharge you for that "favour".

Telkom Internet is a gamble but looks promising although their users seem to keep their experience a secret and also torrents are reported to be heavily shaped (if that sort of thing floats your boat).

Mweb have lost all their credibility since implementing throttling.

Axxess is not for anyone who wants to use their account for downloading or streaming. I don't really know what the value proposition of Axxess uncapped is, perhaps to lure consumers with their low prices but other than that I don't know.

From my experience Afrihost (Business account) is the best of the bunch, granted that they've dropped the ball in the past month and a half. They've unofficially hinted that more capacity (IPC) is on the way if that's any consolation. Probably not, but I don't know how to solve your dilemma as there's not one ISP that will solve all your problems. It probably depends on what you want to use it for. For specific purposes there should be an alternative. Generally speaking I believe Afrihost is still the best.

Wouldn't his second hop be super long if it was congestion related?

2nd hop = 108ms = exchange issue / congestion. Problem on Telkom's side. PM Afriman / Afriguy / Afrigirl and post in the ADSL Capped thread to be sure you get a response.

EDIT:

Also, tweeting @Afrihost should get you an ever quicker response than on myBB

Not necessarily if you have the self discipline for a capped account then perhaps try another ISP. Exchange congestion has anecdotally been fixed by switching ISP, not sure how that works and Telkom is not telling.

Really sorry that I did not catch this thread earlier - and sorry that you are having such a poor time :(

As some people have commented - we are currently upgrading our IPC capacity to deliver a better Uncapped DSL experience. We do believe that what we offer is very different to what is out there. We don't throttle our users and we ensure that regardless of shaping, we always give you 100% realtime performance - which we believe is the biggest priority for our clients.

I'm not sure of all the specifics of the issues you're experiencing - but I'd definitely like to help if I can.

Drop me a PM when you can, I'd love to chat further :)
