Need to replace ADSL with something else what are the options

Hi,

So I stay in Bothasig in Cape Town and the exchange is dodgy at the best of times, there is so much noise on my phone that the ADSL drops connection all day every day. Telkom has been out 10 to 15 times already and they have identified that the cable from my street into the exchange needs to be changed. This has been ongoing for the last 18 months the sad part is that I am less than 800 meters from the main exchange in Bothasig and my QOS is utter shyte.

So what are my alternate options here to replace ADSL with? All I am looking for is buffer less YouTube, good stable ping for international gaming specifically WOW. Uncapped service would be nice but not a must. I am thinking of joining the CPT WUG anyway for the "uncapped" file sharing part anyway.

There is many services out there but if someone can point me at a reliable, stable company that would be great.

yeah join ctwug , least get your files there.

Would suggest try cellc prepaid sim card to check your signal , then sign up at cellc.

I was at bothasig to check out the x-mas lights on the houses the other night , my cellc signal was full most of the time.

I get around 50m/s lower ping to EU servers with 8ta vrs CellC.
Best to try out both.
1 of the biggest problems with 3G is when they run specials & their network gets over subscribed.
I've seen this with CellC before but also see others complaining with similiar with 8ta - depends on where you are for signal strength too,best to try out both with a small bundle to compare.
Voda & Mtn price themselves out the equation when looking for larger bundles.

I think you're over-exaggerating on the "10 to 15" times Telkom has been out to your place tbh, because if they did and if the cable needs replacing, they would have done so within a 6 month period.

Not exactly. Wimax is incredibly stable and has amazing latency for a wireless technology. I suggest the OP researches Wimax providers like Neotel, iBurst and Vodacom. It's going to be more expensive, sure, but it's a viable alternative to ADSL if you're in the Wimax footprint.

I have the reference numbers and all the contact details of every single techie that came out to my place as well the repeat visits over the last 18 months. And the total reference numbers I have for fault call outs is 9 one of the call outs resulted in no less than 4 repeat visits over a two week period as different departments had to come and inspect as the normal techie works with the mini exchange and the connection to your house while the section that connects from the mini exchange to the local area exchange is different people. so unless I am being taken for a ride here nothing has been fixed over the last 18 months as the noise on the line is so degraded that I cannot make a call from the land line anymore. I have been burned by service providers before and I am meticulous in keeping notes on references and contact people just for this sort of issue.

You can try Amobia. In recent weeks they've started upgrading their equipment (I think) and had a few hiccups. But all seems back to normal. I get 160ms to BBC.co.uk and local to JHB is +- 50ms. Currently on 1mb uncapped for 499 but they will be upgrading people to 2mb for same price end of December apparently. If you need voice they do offer a VoIP service as well.
