Need to start upgrading my PC

AMD is confident of having a launch this year still on the HD7xxx. Expect to wait a month for reasonable stock levels in SA. Cant see price being above R5000 for either, dont know where you pulled that from, much more likely to be R3-4.5k.

History has always been R6000($599) for the Fastest GPU, both for Nvidia and ATI, dependand on which is faster.
The 7950 should be if the 2nd fastest GPU about R4.5K.
If the ATI does not have the fastest GPU it should be R5K for the 7970 and R4K for the 7950.

Strange, because both HD5870 and HD6970 launched with sub $400 price tags  The 5870 was the top performer at launch, getting beaten only by dual GPU cards here and there. My history must be borked

The 5870 was not the fastest at launch the 295's was than the 480 launched which was just as quick as the 295. The 6970 wasn't the fastest the 480 was just as fast and cheaper but a worse card period, hot and underperforming. And the 58xx series was in very short supply.
The 580 was only 6-8 weeks launched after the 6970 and the 6970 just couldn't keep up with the 580 thus only competing only with the 570, the 6970 was delayed aswell as the 580 was insane in leaked benchies and the 6970 just could not keep up simple.
If you are not the fastest you can not Sell at $599.
If you feel the 7 series is only going to cost R4K than it will only compete with the GTX 670 and not the 680.

How much was 5870 when it launched? i still see 4.6k pricing for it.

Titan Ice Computers Sold the 5870's at RAGE 2009 at about R5000 - R5500
And those where CLUB3D cards.

Reading is good for you
1) The GTX295 is a dual GPU card.
2) The GTX480 launched after the HD5870, meaning the 5870 was the fastest single core chip at launch
3) Didnt say the 6970 was the fastest at launch now did I?
4) About the GTX580, refer to point 3
5) HD5870 launched with a MSRP of $399 and was the fastest single core card out at the time. Feel free to check the launch reviews. Heck, it even beat the dual core GTX295 in several games
Guru3D - $399
Anandtech - $379
Hardwarecanucks - $399

So where you pulled $599 from I dont know. Even the GTx480 and 580 launched at $499. A full $100 (roughly R1000 when sold here) cheaper than what you say happened with the single core GPUs

I recall buying my HD5850 for $270 and in SA it was ±R3500 (x11/12 the price in USA). This was in November/December 2009, so not long after its launch. HD5870 was around the R4.5-6k mark at launch iirc depending on brand (also 12x US price at the time), and a little bit over the MSRP ($420) for two months because of supply issues (HD5xxx was just that good and GTX4xx was nowhere in sight). I recall SA had higher prices than usual during this period because 99% of the supply was going states side for Christmas.
