Neighbour's Wifi

/hides shiny new 1000mw Mikrotik

Just had a look, these tiny little OpenMesh APs that MyBB was ever so kind enough to gift to me are 200mw and they're about the same size as a box of smokes...

Wonder what will happen to my neighbours WiFi networks when I get all 5 of them up and running in a proper mesh.. :D

Remove your router from the safe, away from metal. Can move must be a option. For a test move it anywhere.

Check that microwave and more importantly cordless phone do not reside next to wifi router. Phone because a lot of them cause interference (I noticed this).

I have a similar problem wherein the interference level gets to a point wherein I have to restart the router so that it can find the best channel at the time.. Meh. I'm just gonna get a bigger antennae hahaha take that.

Not even 30 cm ?

It doesn't even to be that much. Sometimes changing the antenna angle, or moving the router a centimter forward or backward can make a difference.

If you have two machines of which one is a laptop and you are capable of using a remote connection to the laptop from a machine close to te router, you can try moving the laptop to various locations while monitoring it's signal strength via remote desktop and then try moving the antenna and/or router. Allow a few minutes between changes to allow the signal to stabilize.

You can also check the connections to your laptop wifi board as it appears quite common for the connector wires to be the 'wrong' way around which can severely affect performance - see this link http://www.jamescroft.co.uk/blog/technology/fix-for-lenovo-g580-wifi-issues-on-windows-8/
