Nene admits Gupta errors, begs for forgiveness

What guarantee would Juju have that whoever comes in won't continue to do what Nene was doing? Juju is strategic, harping on about known Gupta ministers like Malusi is useless, casting doubt on Ramaphosa's new dawn by exposing one of the good boys as being not so good after all is a political masterstroke for the EFF, just what they needed to be relevant again after Ramaphosa killed their vibe by announcing that the ANC supports EWC.
 
So it looks like Nene is walking and once again shows the EFF is wagging the ANCs tail.

Nhlanhla Nene tells Ramaphosa: relieve me of my duties

Finance minister Nhlanhla Nene has asked President Cyril Ramaphosa to relieve him of his duties following public pressure over his testimony at the commission of inquiry into state capture at which he admitted to meetings with the Guptas.

The request came after South Africans as well as political parties rejected his apology for previously undisclosed meetings with the Guptas at Saxonwold and their business premises in Midrand from 2010 to 2014, when he served as deputy minister and minister of finance respectively.

Business Day understands that Nene approached Ramaphosa at the weekend with the request. Now it is up to the president to decide Nene’s future.

Actually If he does that he would render the EFF irrelevant and give much needed relief for Ramaphosa to deal with other Gupta ministers that he could not fire previously. The EFF was going to milk this until the election, disrupt the budget speech and heckle Ramaphosa in parliament.

Again I love how the EFF is keeping the ANC as well as the DA in check. They should work hard to retain their votes and get more, they are doing a good job.

One person's "holding to account" is another person's mudslinging / cheap point-scoring.

People have said that the DA pointing out the ANC's wrongdoings was cheap politics.

It's all perspective.

The cheap point-scoring is always there but if the complaints are valid there should be no issues.

I wouldn't be so quick to judge this guy. He stopped the ANC from walking us off a financial cliff. A R1 Trillion energy deal would have sunk this country. I shudder to think what would have happened.

There's a good chance his eventual elevation to minister of finance may be at the Guptas direction. Maybe all those meetings they had with him was for them to suss of if he'd make for a pliable minister should he get the job. The Guptas, if they directed the appointment, were obviously wrong on that count as he went on to do everything but their bidding.

The aliterate have clearly not read the Gupta emails run here at length in Daily Maverick (and I’d recommend a good read). Those emails lay out an anatomy of Cabinet capture thanks to the hapless Gupta bag-man Ashu Chawla. His inbox was a festival of evidence of trips to Dubai, accounts being opened, ministers jetting on the Gupta’s ZS-OAK plane and other forms of favours and bribes. Not once did Nene’s name come up. This is surely important.

Asking Ramaphosa to be the one to fire him is a good move for the ANC if they want to look like they're doing something about corruption in government. His decision to testify at the commission so bluntly is also a tactical move against the public protector's investigation into him, because she can't control the narrative when his story is already out there.

I don't think the carrot being dangled was big enough, even after 14 visits still not what he was wanting
