I was wondering if the Neotel rep could enlighten me as to why I get such swings in latency on my Neoflex router.

I use it to play WoW and that is the only measurement I care about and I am not a latency nazi, as long as it stays at or below 800ms I can play quite happily. Around 500ms would be perfect.

However, my latency varies from sub 300ms (on rare occasions) to plus 2000ms. I was wondering at what point in the connection (me to tower to switch to international gateway to wow EU server) this latency is introduced and if there is anything that can be done to stabilise this.

I understand that if there is a thunderstorm then this is beyond Neotel's control but sometimes I will log on and it will be at 2000ms and then it will gradually tick down to 1500ms and then 1000ms and finally settle at around 800ms.

Maybe there is some tweaking that needs to be done on the network to eliminate latency spikes and if I can help I would be happy to provide feedback.

Maybe it's because it depends on the signal strength etc.

Mines always on 4 bars, but I saw it drop completely to no bars for a minute or so yesterday.

The same with you, when it's on 4 bars, you get 300ms, then it drops slightly or completely and up goes your latency etc.

I am guessing that the only way to find check the signal strength on the Neoflex router is by installing the desktop software and connecting it via USB.

Or am I missing something?

Do a tracert to see where the latency is introduced.

I have the same problems, and I have done several tracert's to isolate the problem.

The latency only gets introduced with international traffic - for local you won't even notice a difference.

The latency is introduced at the last server in Johannesburg, before the connection goes to London.

The connection goes from the server
"if-1-8.bb1.JSO-Johannesburg.as6453.net" to the server
"if-1-7.bb2.JSO-Johannesburg.as6453.net".
Between 8 and 10pm this adds almost 1400ms latency.

Both servers are in Johannesburg, if you want to ping them individually their IP addresses are 216.6.55.6 and 216.6.55.41.

I'm at work at the moment, so some of the details might be wrong - writing the IP-addresses and server names of the top of my head.

The funny thing is - I've been calling Neotel every single day since the 1st of February to just tell them that.
I have not once received a call back from any technical staff.
It's like I'm Carl Niehaus, asking them for some money.

I have tried to post these details on here before, but I see now that my post didn't actually go through - apparently a moderator had to approve it first.

Ah well, here's hoping they fix it - soon.

Fair enough.

Maybe you could let us know what kind of latencies you would expect to see on the network if it were performing properly.

And how do you monitor latency on your network?

I will most certainly try to do this once the investigation is complete.

Hehe, already have that thread bookmarked...

Please keep us up to date - my contract is at stake...
