Neotel charges for data delivery overhead

Once again Neotel has overcharged me for roughly 35% more bandwidth than I have used.

The percentage of bandwidth Neotel keeps charging me for is almost always 35%, give or take a percentage. Surely Neotel should be able to gather something from that? No matter, in 2-3 months time Neotel will have to deal with it in the small claims court.

Good for you Venom... know your rights.

If Neotel is overcharging you without any reason as to why, and without any proof of your supposed usage then i say nail them.

That I cannot wait for :D

One thing that I've noticed is that if I don't turn off the modem it continues sending small amounts of data, even if the computer is switched off. I reckon it could add up to quite a lot during a month if you leave it on.

Also, after downloading I closed my torrent client, but DUMeter continued to pick up around 20kbps of activity after I had ceased all internet activity. I restarted the router to stop this.

So now I just switch off my router when I shut down or restart the computer.

Now that you mention this, I have seen this as well, mine not quite 20kb/s but 1 and 2kb/s constantly, maybe thats the problem

I've noticed this as well. I plan on turning my phone off when I'm not using the internet from here on out and once the end of March comes we'll see if that data that's trickling through is the problem behind all the overhead.

I never turned mine off, but I was also always connected so I dont see how this could be the problem.
And I dont see how this could have added up to 6 gigs in amonth.

Sounds more like a worm doing that, check how many packets it sends or to how many IPs it tries to connect? Assuming this is originating from you client PC behind router.

If you asked them to open up incoming ports, then that also accounts towards your cap :( Even if you disconnect.... If your IP is static then perhaps they monitor everything against that IP regardless if you are connected or not.

I wonder

I got overcharged big this month. My vnstat usuage shows 2.19GB (with a 1% error) while Neotel claims 3GB. In Jan I only connected using LINUX to monitor my usage. The 1% error is the app I use updates every minute and during a disconnect the traffic for that minute is not recorded, my line never drops though.

I will be auditing vnstat this month to check its accuracy but it is spot on with my 3G usage.

The real test will be this months account as I was on holiday for 7 days and my usage is only 178Mb this month so far.

I was VERY interested in the 10gb Neoflex offering but I WILL NOT be going anywhere near it after reading through this entire thread... its not the problem that these subscribers have been having so much as the fact that the majority of people would never pick something like this up coupled with the lack of tangible response that makes Neotel seem... well... downright dishonest.

@NEOTEL: ARE YOU LISTENING??? TALK TO THESE PEOPLE!!!! SORT THIS CRAP OUT!!!

Oh and BTW: drop the stupid 24 month contract it makes you look like you're hiding something, some particular reason you need to lock people in?

Just make it month to month, if the product is good the customers will be back - have the balls to back your product, you need to show how you are different to the other offerings not how similarly you can suck.

As much as it sucks to publicly admit this, the 35% extra bandwidth I keep mentioning about being charged for is in actual fact 25%. But I admit this in order to keep things accurate and perhaps enlighten others to the same inconsistency. I've noticed readings from other people seem to show the same result (25%) from Neotel.

Hi Guys.

After serious trawling through all the Neotel forums I have decided to go the Telkom route. Seems like Neotel can't cope as it its, Maybe I'll try again in a year or two once they get their act together.

What did it for me was wanting an agent to call me back. they said they can't and they will get a supervisor to call me. 5 hours down the line and nothing.
I sent an email last Friday morning and have had no feedback on that too.

So Neotel you lost another potential customer. Good going.
and being in the IT business I definitely will not promote your products to anyone that asks.
We are your indirect marketing agents, people come to us for help and options.
and i will point out these forums to any person that inquires on your products.

Bring in an Uncapped Neodata Flex package and ill go through this step again and see if the service is better.

So to all you guys using Neotel, i saved some bandwidth for you, one less user congesting the network.

PS: Fix your online ordering page. its been down way to long. or remove the option.

Major overbilling - whose fault?

I've had major overbilling, except that I don't know whether the problem lies on my side or on Neotel's.

For December, Neotel overbilled me by 430% (reported that I used 5298 MB instead of the 1231 MB that Netlimiter showed me) and for January, 456% (reported that I used 4781 MB instead of of 1048 MB).

I have Windows Vista running, with Netlimiter running all the times, monitoring Dial-UP connections. I also use Internet Connection Sharing with my wife, and it seems to be picking up her usage as well. However - can I be missing something? Is it NetLimiter that only picks up 25% of the info?

Auto-updates etc. are disabled as far as possible. When we do nothing, NetLimiter shows nothing going through the Internet Connection.

I want to make sure before I shove it down Neotel's throats - I applied for the 2.5 GB prime with the idea to keep my account at R400, not R600+.

HOLY CRUD!!!! That's one heck of an overbilling... or should i say two.

My first guess is that it is your side as nobody else has been billed even close to that excess. I would suggest uninstalling netlimiter and installing a different package such as DUmeter and then seeing if you are still getting that much of a difference. If you are, then i would give Neotel a shout.

If Neotel only has 450 subscribers and are expanding, makes you think doesn't it? They have to make revenue somehow ... :D

I did install another package last night - don't want to dock out 25$ to buy DU meter (trying to reduce my expenses here...). Switched to "Bandwidth Meter" (http://www.wizard-soft.com/meter/index.htm). It does seem to pick up more "idle" usage than Netlimiter, so I'll see how it goes for a while.

In short, don't use Netlimiter. Neotel has tested it and it isn't reliable (so they say) but they have shown that DUmeter has been a consistent alternative to monitoring your bandwidth.

Ugh, I really don't want to buy a piece of software, but if I need to, I will.

Is there any word yet of a monitoring site from Neotel's side? At least then I can do day-per-day testing, rather than having to wait a whole billing cycle. Since I would start monitoring with DUMeter only in the middle of the month, I won't have an accurate indication of Feb's usage. So I would need to wait the whole of March and halfway into April to receive the bill before I can check!

BUMP

Seeing as a new Neotel rep is in place - anything new on this front?
