Neotel Lite Speed Report

same here. i've had it, rather use the devil you know than the devil you don't know.

If telkom wants my business back in a hurry, I require them to come eat the contents of my cat's litter bowl first! - and yes, Its due to be changed by the smell of it!

*sigh* Neotel has been dead for the past 10 minutes, now its crawling sorta... other pages timing out. Busy booting my laptop with 3G card... *irritated*

Gaijin and LabAnimal how "are" your RSSI and signal quality ?

Just noticed I was able to pick up another PN, climbed ontop of the roof and honed in as best as I can using Debug Mode to get lowest RSSI and finally have adequate signal and coverage. Thank you Neotel and to the Engineer who assisted me, thank you very much!

External Antenna
PN: 328
RSSI: 68

- Last Result(http://speedtest.neotel.co.za):
Download Speed: 135 kbps (16.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 72 kbps (9 KB/sec transfer rate)

It's all about the coverage and signal quality I'm afraid, I would really suggest using an external antenna if not already doing so and chase up the Neotel technical side to make sure you have the adequate coverage.

english pls! i'm not even a half kilometer away from the building with the neotel transmitters on... infact clear line of sight. Signal on my device is full, so no, not bad signal, other than that, dunno what you're talking about... RSSI, PN ??

RSSI is your signal strength indicator, generally the lower the better, I used to have 3/4 bars signal strength but a high RSSI of 90+ which gave me issues.
From my Experience:
<70 is optimal,
<=80 is good,
<=85 good can be better,
<=95 usable with increased intermittency and latency,
>100 Lucky to get page to load with high intermittency and latency.

PN is the base station(cell) you are currently connected too, this can change depending on the direction where you point your antenna and new/upgraded towers in the vicinity aswell as your signal quality. PN is normally used to identify your connecting Tower/Cell. Other than RSSI you have too look at inteference and tower congestion that will affect your service.

To check your RSSI and PN on NeoConnect Lite:
Check This

Just using the normal antenna I find that RSSI changes day-to-day so it's good to use the DEBUG test in getting optimal Signal and placement of the Lite Device. There are quiet a few software programs that help with that, but they only seem to work for NeoConnect Prime devices and Neoflex, unfortunately I have not come across anything that works on NeoConnect Lite and have to use DEBUG mode.

Yep that can definately be alot better, funny you mention PN 160, That was my PN I used to have and gave me so much hassle. Get the external antenna, made a huge difference for me.

Firstly thank you all for this interesting and saddening replies

Has anyone here had a an antenna installed and seen a speed increase, after multiple escalations I am still without the previously promised antenna (6months now) and am considering buying my own one.

Do u know where I can purchase this type of thing in the Northgate or Sandton area ?

Do you think this will really help ?

Update:

It’s been a while since my last post but thought this would be interesting for all those uncapped lite (good coverage users)

Im getting Neotel to install my antenna after my legal sent a breach of contract to them for not delivering the speeds promised on the contact.

Currently Im on the Uncapped Lite package, with a TRANSFER speed of about 6-16KBPS

Speedtest.net results (12/10/09, 12:51pm) :
Ping: 1411ms
Download: 0.07mbps
Upload: 0.04mbps

In an excellent coverage with 2 base stations (towers) within 1km from me.

I will report back tomorrow after the installation as to the difference made.

Hi Bluedevil678

Hopefully the antenna makes a better difference for you. I still get a max download of 17kBps so that is ok.

With no external antenna, the service was unusable but the external antenna saves me there, good luck for lower latency and better dl/ul speeds.

This is what I still get with an external antenna:

Ping: 1040ms
Download: 137kbps
Upload: 73kbps
PN:328
RSSI:77/78

Hey there, so was a quick install and I now get

Ping: 783ms
Download: 0.14mbps
Upload: 0.08 mbps
RSSI: 50

It may not seem like much difference from my previous post but it makes a HUGE difference when browsing and downloading...

After much stuggles Im happy!

Awesome, that is how it's supposed to be :)
big drop in your RSSI.

Nice to be able to 'internet' without fear of running short extra booster bundles lol
so I must say thats a plus side with the Lite Uncapped package, hope you get to chew on well deserved bandwidth!

my RSSI seems to get better as it starts to rain or get cloudy, i normally have an RSSI of 72-77 but as soon as it gets cloudy it goes to 69-72 i always seem to be able to download at about 15 - 18Kb/s, i have no real problems with neotel signal so far, i live in forest hill the south of johannesburg, neotel light with an external arial.

Can anyone in the Durban area, more specifically the Morningside / Overport suburbs, comment on this service?
The statements regarding utterly shocking service give me pause, but I am really running out of patience with iBurst and their shocking service, and the Neotel Lite uncapped seems about the most cost effective alternative.

1 Year 6 months Using NeoConnect Lite Uncapped

Thought I'd update as service has been very good over the last few weeks and Neotel do deserve some credit when it's due.

Service has been the best ever over the last few weeks within our 1 year and a half signup, really hope it stays this way.
Haven't had much chance to download this month but am able to do just over 1gig/day which is perfectly "A" ok and serves my purpose for exactly what I need Lite Uncapped for.

Thank you Neotel, keep it up and let's stick to this standard :D

m/sg Hugo See!, put in a good word for you guys, can we get a secret upgrade or cash discount or re-imbursement for the 7 months we had no service which was promised verbally over the phone by <name hidden> and <name hidden> please?
Times are hard and I am entitled to ask, as I was promised <we can go back and check call logs if you don't believe me>, surely you understand.

I HAVE BEEN HAVING A PROBLEM WITH BAD DOWNLOAD SPEEDS FOR THE PAST TWO MONTHS NOW, I HAVE REPORTED THIS TO NEOTEL SO MANY TIMES THAT I HAVE LOST COUNT, THEY HAVE STILL NOT FIXED MY PROBLEM, ON TOP OF THAT THE CONNECTION GOES FLAT BUT DOES NOT DISCONNECT, SO WHGEN I COME HOME I DISCOVER THAT I HAVE DOWNLOADED NOTHING FOR THE WHOLE DAY!!!@

I suggest you contact Hugo and send him an email to [email protected] and please stop shouting, it's quiet rude and uncalled for, please do not reply on my thread again, thank you.

Data service has been good for the NeoConnect Lite recently, can't say the same about Neotel accounts though.
