Neotel Making up usage

Phoned the Call Center and Tsolo then contacted me back.

Neotel's Billing system is currently offline for "routine" maintenance, apparrantly..??, so I had to provide the information on the avarage usage on a monthly basis.
Neotel also suggested the possibility that the MAC filtering I had setup (block all except 3 MACs) is not sufficient and that I should use a WEB key. This is rediculus, I have had it setup since I got the service, why would it become a problem now. Not to mention I have been in IT the past 16 years, including Networks!
Tsolo will now contact me this afternoon to confirm the routers settings..

Guess I'll have to wait for the detailed billing, if the system ever comes back up... lol :-)

You have been in IT for 16 years and can not get this sorted, where does it leave the end user like me that knows f... all about these things!
Did Tsolo mention that other people were also having the same problem?

No mention of other users experiencing the same problem.
It seems that the general excuse is that your router could have been hacked or your pc might have a virus or malware on..

Good news is that they recently installed their own Neoflex device as it would assist them to help customers, cant wait for the bill they'll get ..lol

Ok, I received the usage information.
Unfortunately, there is no IP's, only time and date stamp with a constant flow of 4.7MB.
There is an indication that 4.760MB of traffic is routed to the Neotel network almost every 2 minutes of the day.
I have now authorized Neotel to perform a trace to determine where the traffic is routed.

I also contacted the Helpdesk and they informed me that I have just over 1GB of cap left on my Neoflex 10GB account.
This is also very alarming as I have not downloaded anything this month and I should still have more than 8GB of cap left.

Lets hope the trace results reveals the culprit..

You might have been hacked, but according to Neotel, because I use than handset, it is impossible to hack me, so, either I have a virus, IT checked Laptop and it is very VERY clean or there might be a problem with my handset.

June 3.3GB used (ok moved into my new place a few days into June)
July 5.9GB
August 5.6GB
September 4.6GB
October 7GB
November 29GB
December 36GB
January 11GB (for 1 week’s usage as I was out the country prior to that).

SO I went from using an average of 5.2GB per month, I think that’s about 200MB a day, if I was online the full January I would have used 44GB or about 1.46GB per day. Bearing in mind I work in an office from 7am till after 5pm most days, (Neotel is for home use) the speed at which we connect with Neotel (could be why everyone is complaining about the speed, I’m using it all).

04.02.2010 Received another new handset from Neotel
11.02.2010 Checked usage 6GB with a 48 hour delay
12.02.2010 Checked usage 6.4GB with a 48 hour delay, so with out changing anything in the way I use my Neotel, I only 400MB last night, big change for the 1.46GB I used with the old hand set.

Being techno-phobic I am open to correction……..

I have emailed all those peeps one long last email, with a deadline of Monday end of day. Then I'll march down to Neotel offices and demand to see someone. I am over this ****

Ok, on Friday afternoon a sniffer trace was done on my Neoflex. They found "ADSL" traffic being routed accross the link??
On my way home I was contacted and asked about an IT site I had browsed at the time.
Nobody had browsed any site, since an unfortunate lightning strike on the 7th of Feb.
They will now block the port, however it appears that the router had been hacked. (unconfirmed)
There were no registered wifi clients connected and I am baffelede about this.

Still waiting for feedback from the Neotel IP Specialist..

Also decided to have my router swopped out.
Will keep you posted..

for three months my connection would not go above 1kbs, so i requested a refund for those three months and canceled my account with them, they responded by saying that i used more than 30GB in each of those months, this was totally impossible as i could not even open a web page or download anything,

Its been 3 days since I last heard from Neohel. Will send Hugo Troskie a follow-up mail today to find out wtf is going on.
Also brought in my Neoflex Router to exchange it for a new one.

Putting a stop payment on that debit order. Ha ha ha, Netoel can provide me proof, and then maybe i'll pay.

If they don't provided me with answers by 22nd I am doing the same!

Yes and they are more than welcome to take me to court for not paying, as i have emailed and called numerous times asking for proof, and have not received it, and if they suddenly show up with the proof at court, i'll just bring it into question that the "proof" must have been fabricated, why couldn't i have got it when i asked for it.

I can phone MTN right now and ask them to send me my data usage and they will do so straight away.

Good Afternoon Hugo,

I have not yet had a further feedback following a conversation with Masakane on Friday afternoon.
They had found ADSL traffic during the trace to a specific port. Masakane mentioned that he would discuss it with an IP Specialist to see if the port could be blocked.

I have however exchanged the Neoflex Router today at your Midrand offices. When I queried the investigation the system indicated no further progress.

Do you have any further feedback in this regard?

Thank You

Could it be that there is something insecure about the Neotel network and you guys with low speeds and obscenely high usage are having your routers being hijacked?

As far as I know, its a definate possibility. There are some very-very gifted hackers out there in the world. If they can hack the CIA or FBI (some time back) surely a little router would not stand in their way..
Still waiting for the verdict on my usage.
Best of all is that I gave up my Telkom ADSL for Neotel due to Telkom's capping. I had felt that Neotel deserved a chance to proove itself to the market.
Fortunately, the line is still installed and it would not be much effort to move back, its the going back that bothers me..

DaVirus -sniffer tracing is still continuing, been down to networks earlier this mornig to check.

A little more patience thanks

Hugo

Hi Hugo, thank you for the feedback.
The last time I had a look this morning the Neoflex router could not get an IP from the Neotel network. I rebooted it a few times at 04:45, powered it off, but could not get the device to work...
Will the device eventually get an IP and start routing by itself? Cause I am not sure what can be traced if the device is offline.

Thank You
