Neotel neotel neotel...

Did they not promise South Africans true broadband?
sorry I cant take a company seriousely that a) while shoping gets ask "sir can I offer you some wireless
Interwebs" and on my reply that wireless dot have a stable enough ping for me to use for online gamein. I get ask by there rep "woot is a ping"... And b) a company that uses bubble wrap and some of those red and white caution tape to water proof the cable they just put in the ground

Data Usage - It is currenlty measured and set from 00H00 on the 1st of the month to 23H59 on the last day of the month. Eg: November 1 to November 30. It isn't calculated according to billing run dates.
Good to know from our side. At least now this question is no longer in the gray area. I run a smoothwall between the device and my network. Cant keep old month stats but will install a util to help with that. Will keenly watch the end of this month to see what happens.

Gary - your ticket was closed on the 19/08, for what reason i'm not sure. I do have the agents details that closed it and i will follow up why this was the case. If you would like me to re-establish a new ticket i will, but let me explain the coverage map here.
Just re-open that ticket. The problem has not been magically solved.
That call should never have been closed and in followup calls I had asked for it to be re-opened. But appears I was just lied to to get me off the line.
You cannot close the call just because a tech confirms that yes I now have no more signal.

I have seen that it is indeed not as accurate as what we all like to believe. Every area directly around the tower was marked and shown correct, however they have taken assumption spots just outside of the official singal area and said sure, with line of sight (based at 20m height) these spots will have coverage. However, it seems they forgot to consider things like weather, current users online, interference and so forth. I am working with IT to review and redesign the coverage map platform.
My situation
Up untill that call was logged , I had a FULL GREEN signal with no external antennae. Solid downloads no disconnects.
Saturday before that call, there was a 2 hour downtime. After the downtime, I had no signal to red signal. Someone changed their antennae direction on the towers. Despite this noone from your side has even admitted that work even took place.
I then borrowed an antennae from a friend and managed to get a green signal. Spent 2 months begging and pleading to get an antennae from AJ.
Since then my reception with an external antennae and many hours on the roof to get the optimal setup I have been experiencing a gradual but steady decline. Now currently getting a orange/red signal with constant disconnects and anywhere from a 10KBPS to 60KBPS spikes with an average of 30KBPS. This is unacceptable taking into effect what I actually started with. Just because of the disconnects the service is totally unusable for what I wanted it for. Never mind that at times it cannot even maintain 10KBPS.

I actually have to maintain a Iburst account just to do what I wanted to do with Neotel because of the disconnects. All that neotel is usefull for is downloads ( with a download manager, even then I get corrupted downloads ) and webbrowsing. No Gaming / No Standbywork from Home / Nothing that needs large transfers of data.

It is not my problem that your planners do not understand anything about creating coverage maps or that you may be loading towers more than what you intended. What I would like to know is what you are doing to fix the situation eg new towers in my area etc. This was info that AJ promised me and never delivered on. I do not want to cancel, but if you guys want to cancel then we can discuss penalties.

... now that my division has launched and is official, we've taken ownership of all online forums under our wing. Thus, ensuring that every query is responded and addressed. My team consists of Mpho (Specialist), Mbongeni (Specialist starting month end) and myself Hugo (manager).
Be assured that if you post on here, you will be attended and addressed.
We still finding ground and so within the month every thread will have been actioned.

Good to know.
From my side , unless I start seeing an improvement I will continue to slate Neotel in every possible way at every opertuinity on every public media where I see an announcement from them. I also intend following the ICASA and other routes stating bad and possiblly criminal business practices.

Gary - Getting an FSE to goto you. Forget past promises of one that doesn't pitch up, this will happen now!

Ticket allocation will happen when the FSE gets the callout log from division, and i'll post it here as well for you. This will give as a proper report sheet on the network status by you. Havent received a list of roll out BTS's yet, but will post on new thread.

We'll comm shortly - mail me your contact number if possible:
[email protected]

Jean - got your mail, and looking into FSE callout to you as well. Seems alot needs to be done. What is your connection speed / transfer rate currently.
the usage tracker - doubt there is a proper beta one if they haven't launched this yet???? Trying to dive into it to see how they doing it at the moment - this will give a clear understanding of the actual "product". Will feedback to you

Hugo

Neotel contacted me again stating that he is waiting for my contact details (which I have actually sent now for the 3rd time). So maybe something is wrong with the PM function of this site.

I am now going to try and make contact with ICASA (probably only next week as I am suddenly loaded with meetings). My suggestion will be to have Neotel stop getting in any new subscribers so that they can solve all their teething problems before taking on new business. I don't think that is unreasonable. They can make up a credible excuse e.g. like there is no stock of any modem/router until publically announced. If they can apply their personnel to sort out all the math, towers, bandwidth, throttling/shaping and signal problems then all the current clients will be happy and not cancel their contracts. Then all the new clients will get good service as well.

The way I now use my Neotel router is very much in the same way Russians lived years ago. If you see a queue, you queue ...even if you don't know what is being sold. When I suddenly get some speed I try to use it on anything. The one example is YouTube. I do a lot of research on alternative energy. So instead of browsing and watching the videos at full speed, checking out the crap and going on to the following I am now queing the downloads in Aura. Then I leave it on 24/7, especially overnight and watching it the next morning. The problem is that many of these videos are utter crap. The one video was about a solar stirling engine (which I thought gave more details), but the video ended up being a 40MB video of the same scene with the engine puttering on. ...and many more like that. The fact is that I cannot effectively use the system. During the day I cannot queue downloads as I then cannot download or send emails effectively. At the end of last month I had to use up my last 750MB on my Vodacom 3G contract. It was a breeze, a complete 180 on Neotel.

So having a router than can theoretically do 3.1Mbit/s with a 15GB cap is very nice. But sitting with a system that drops to 3kbytes/s (avg 10kbytes/s in the last few days) means that you can (theoretically) use the 15GB cap if you utilize it 24/7/31. The problem is it not nice. If I buy a car and its peak speed erratically jumps between 10km/h to 150km/h it means that I can get from JHB to Cape Town but that it will take several days to get there.

Just a few minutes ago I did my internet banking (VAT must be in next week). Man, what a pain!!! Dead slow. But in 10 minutes from now I might have 80kbytes/s (for 30 minutes). Tomorrow the entire network might be down again.

I actually got myself a prepaid Vodacom SIM. When I need to do something urgent I plug that modem in. What does that say?

Also, with no bandwidth monitor it makes it difficult for me to use the router as a wireless access point. I am now running it on one machine, as a modem, with DuMeter as my gauge. The other PCs now connect to the server (192.168.0.1). The problem is that if AxessTel disconnects and reconnects that it changes my server's address to another DHCP allocated IP address. There is probably another setting somewhere to fix this, but the fact is that if I don't count the data then there is now way to effectively know what is going on.

I don't know if Neotel reads these forums. Maybe they have the "see/hear no evil" mentality. The one thing I do know is that their system is flaky, and eventually this new, young company is going belly up. This won't be due to bad speeds but because of their lack of human to human service. Telkom can easily get away with being bastards. They make so much money that they honestly don't care if I get an ADSL line or not. But Neotel is new, living on borrowed investor money. They should be careful.

Checking

Jean - LOL - Truly. don't know, maybe they sharing lunch breaks. hahaha

Gary - Had a response from AJ, so need to confirm with you
1. Did he supply you with an antennae?
2. You appear to be in a spillage location - so am trying to hunt down the list for BTS roll out to see what build up is going to occur there. Sorry bout the confusion with FSE - still need Jean though to be checked out by them.

VMS - Is it possible you could mail all your challenges directly to our mailbox
[email protected] so i can speed up progress?
Would really appreciate it.

@Neotel my speed is fine (1.1 -> 1.6) so I just want the usage tracker? Don't you want me to come and code it up?

Well.

Kudos to neotel for getting an active rep again.

For me its too little too late... but still, its better than the muted silence we got from them. And having an official rep is WAY better than jeanres. just kidding ;)

1.. Yes, on a temporary basis. The permanent one was still to be organised
2.. Sorry , but this still rings false. The experience I had before the 2 hour downtime was NOT one that would occur from spillage. 2MB download rate, no latency spikes, no disconnections. After a 2 hour period that all dissapeared. Maybe after the 2 hour period my coverage had been changed so that I was in a spillage area, but it definately was not like that before that time. And even if I was in a spillage location , why the hell was I even approved ? There have been a number of assertions that Neotel would only supply a service to those in an "Excellent" location.

I did my homework before I got the service
1. Website showed excellent.
2. One of your vendors came out and signal tested before the time and said I had excellent coverage.
At no time was I informed or led to believe that I was in a spillage area when I ordered the service

Kudos to neotel for getting an active rep again
Agreed , now he has a hell of a lot of work repairing the damage done by the previous lies / silence / inaction ...

And having an official rep is WAY better than jeanres. just kidding ;)
LOL

Good to see things are starting to get moving, after the long [-]death[/-]silence.

Let's hope it will be self-sustaining, and not die a sudden death a few months later down the line.

Gary - I do want to get an FSE out to you again, because then he should be able to see the network strenght problem for being current and true. Which will give us leeway to engineers to self study critical challenges with the BTS thats there since the break in network output.

As well, have agenda point for meeting with AJ on friday about the permanant antennae, so hope this evidently gets one on the way to you.

Jean - the usage tracker will have a bi-level application to it.
1. An sms service or contact number to get current usage details (think they still deciding platform) that will give updated info (up to last change of hour), and
2. A program much the same as what VMC uses currently (within an application) to monitor total use.

This i cannot confirm right now, but when i've seen the model (next week tuesday) then i will give info on.

I dont want to fscking install a application on my machine! I want a website to goto punch in my neotel number and its show me my *****. How freaken difficult is that to do?
