I took a quick look at noetels internet offerings and there didn't seem to be anything even closely competative to what I currently have. phone line rental plus 2 gigs a month at R200 then R29 a gig after that...

The closest I can find from neotel is NeoConnect Lite at 299- that is R100 bucks more expensive.
you paying for all that other garbage- free sms's and minutes to other neotel numbers, but I do not know one single other person who uses neotel so these are worthless to me.

does anyone know if they offer an internet only option for a competitive rate

Get ADSL (or anything else), but do not put yourself through the same pain we put ourselves through. Do like Budza said and read the Neotel forum.

If you do go Neotel, don't say we didn't warn you.

Generally if you use more than 1GB-2GB in a month, ADSL is your cheapest option.

Below 1GB usage the "level to entry" for ADSL is too high with the line rental and modem. This is why these super expensive wireless jobbies got so much traction, as you can literally just load a bundle on your phone and there you go. Yet you pay almost R200 p/GB for those...and people pay it!

Neotel is only cheaper if you are already on a wireless type of connection [3G/HSDPA]. If you are on ADSL, they are more expensive for sure.

Simply put:

Telkom 1GB = R60 [which is considered overpriced mind you as you can get it from other for like R30 p/GB and less]
Neotel 1GB = R80

So on pure bandwidth even Telkom is cheaper, of course you need to pay that Line Rental [and this is where that 1GB comes in, the moment you use more than 1GB your line rental quickly gets "covered" vs. the cost paid at wireless ]

If you remotely use or pla to use more than 1GB-2GB, ADSL in the long run is cheaper by far, with line rental and all.

yeah im using afrihost at the moment, so per gig is cheap, but its the exorbitant line rental that I was hoping to get away from...
as for neotel, R80 a gig is expensive especially seeing as how you have to pay R1800 or whatever for a new modem on top of that.

:D You must really not like these people if you are advising Telkom over Neotel.... I wouldn't mind giving them a go, but none of the packages currently interest me

I just did now- It seems that the Neogo data package is the same price as the NeoConnect Lite 299 but you get 500MB less and no sms's or airtime. I use a desktop so I dont need the mobile option which I suppose would be the major benefit...

Anyway thanks to everyone for the help, it seems that I will stick with Telkom ADSL for now, that seems to be the best option for fixed broadband at this time.

SAINET:

http://www.sainet.co.za/cat_L1.asp?id=1447d915383b29f7ea1&n=products

Description Data Allocation
Price

In-Bundle Rate Outbundle Rate
3G - 250 250 MB R 89 R 0.36 / MB R 0.50 / MB
3G - 500 500 MB R 149 R 0.36 / MB R 0.50 / MB
3G - ONE 1 Gig R 249 R 0.24 / MB R 0.50 / MB
3G - TWO 2 Gig R 369 R 0.19/ MB R 0.50 / MB

Any more than 2GB, and ADSL becomes cheaper again. Entry level= 3G. High usage= ADSL (can get local too).

Neotel is more expensive:

http://www.neotel.co.za/Consumer/Pages/ComparePackages.aspx#NeoGoDataCard

You need their device on top of that :(

Use your phone, get a data package.

If you need more than that, try: http://www.saol.com/

R499 for uncapped 384k, line rental included. That plus the Telkom phone line double charge  is about R600- expensive, but uncapped ;)

Not our fault really. :erm:

Better pricing, service and coverage, and you'd be the one recommended on the Telkom/Mobile threads...

Just telling it how it is:o

Ignore them man, they just being pissy. :)
I'd still buy you a beer Hugo... can't promise it won't be poisned* ;) haha! :o

* Can't the hell spell that word for some reason

Wasn't always the case :/ 8 months of disconnects and an under performing connection changed that though:erm:

well, to throw fuel on the fire.... *grin* I sent my cancellation on tuesday, got a reply that its been escalated. Complained yesterday and cc'ed Hugo because I have not heard anything back yet... - still don't have a confirmation on my cancellation! - Fantastic service hey! you would think they would attend to little things like a cancellation within one day!

I think I'll visit my bank tomorrow, and block Neotel from debiting my account and take my time paying neotel! - seems only fair! No? ;)

Termination

Ok, procedure for termination is as follows:

Any request to terminate is queud for after 25th of the same month.
It is then 25th to 30th that these are manually processed on the system.
And by 1st of the next month @ 00H00:00 you have no connection.

Then we process collection of the device and once received, if any refunds/credits are due that is then processed.

There we have it!

So you have been, sent into the queue system, processed but will systematically only be loaded after the 25th.

thanks for that, but I really think it needs to be communicated and not left unsaid until someone throws a toy!

Yea, you need to do some calculations. The options are very misleading these days, everyone stare themselves blind against Telkom's Line Rental and without realising it, end up paying more for a Wireless solution where the per MB price is sky high.

So, yea if go on say an amount of 5GB a month. To get that on any wireless solution will most likely be more expensive and less reliable than an ADSL solution. That is just how it is i guess.

On the other hand if you're one of those 100MB users [just reads some email here and there], then ADSL is total overkill. Then something like Neogo/Voda Prepaid etc will work out a zillion times cheaper.
