Customer's HDD was showing signs of failing, so did complete backup using Nero 6 backitup onto an external hard drive and verified it. There were 13 *.nba files and 1 *.nbi file.

Installed fresh copy of XP with SP3 and reinstalled Nero 6 which was on original PC.

On trying to restore, message came up: Insert last disc of series, which is crap since all the files are together. The pointed restore program to the .nbi file. Now it says it is corrupt.

Can see all 1 285 000 files using Winzip, but file names all messed up and dates all wrong. Customer is precision engineering co and has 110 000 customer templates stored in here. Emails to Nero technical support get a generic reply but no solution. Have sent 11 such requests to Nero and all they say is that Nero 11 will not restore Nero 6 backups, although I am not using Nero 11 at all.

Customer has hired lady who works 6 days a week to reassemble files with correct names and dates. So far she has been busy 5 weeks and has done about 15% of the work. This exercise is going to cost about R 75000 and many sales have been lost due to missing templates, etc

I now see that there are many complaints about Nero products and iffy customer support.

Anyone have any worthwhile suggestions please? Thanks

Yes I did. The advert for Nero 11 says "backwards compatible with all previous versions" so I bought it. It did not work. Nero then told me ver 11 would not work on previous versions, so I send them the web page advert. No reply. Waste of $29.

I can see all the files with WinZip (as per the post on the club.myce forum)

Problem: File is named consani_engineering_pump_bearing_2011_series 4.pkw
Winzip sees if as consani~.pkw (and date is now 18-03-12 instead of 09-03-12)

Seeing there are over 600 drawings of bearings, who knows which one is which? Each file has to be viewed and renamed. It takes about 5 mins per file

Out of curiosity why did you use such an app instead of imaging the drive or just archiving the files?

Reason I ask is that I don't trust any app that changes files or stores stuff in some proprietary format.

Sorry I can't help with your original query though, real bummer.

Was this a once off backup or were previous auto backups also done?

Where's the failing hard drive?

After I reformatted the failing drive, it has been working 100% again. Probably some corruption, as many files were slow to read. I also replaced the RAM

Where are these backups then?

You should be able to see the older nbi files in a different folder I think but they are hidden.

I have a copy of the backups (the NBA files) and the index file (NBI file). The original backup is still on a 500Gb external drive. It amounts to about 13Gb in total.

When I was called in to sort out the PC, they had been doing incremental backups and there were about 700 of these, only leaving about 4Gb free on the external drive (the last backup attempt failed since the HDD was full, and they went into panic mode). So I deleted 690 of the oldest backups to create space for a full system backup of the documents.

None of the NBI files are readable by Nero backup, the latest one or any of the older ones. I used the original CD to reinstall the program after re-loading the OS

Ok so I went thru the exact problem, and now I'm trying to create the nbi file but I need to find the right language to use, I'm using the nba file as example but I can't seem to find the exact file format. Did you find anything on your side ?
