Nervous when driving

Funny. I found that the less frequent I drive, the more "adventurous" I drive when I do occasionally drive.

As Fazda mentioned, pull off using your handbrake...besides 'feeling' that the car wants to move, you can also 'see' this at the rev counter. With hand brake up, give a decent amount of acceleration, lets say rev to 2500-3000rpm. Keep the rev steady and release clutch slowly...look at your rev counter and when the clutch hits the 'sweet spot' the revs will DROP altough accerelation is steady. This is when you release the handbrake. The amount of acceleration depends on the steepness of the incline.

Stalling a car isn't the end of the world. Almost anyone does it a few times in a car they don't know.

Rolling backwards into the guy behind on the other hand :D
Handbrake is your friend when taking off.

Anyone who doesn't grab the handbrake immediately when stalling is an utter idiot. (Unless the car is in motion, of course.)

Its a golden rule with me. I'm trying to get in the habit of pulling my hand brakes up whenever I stop but its taking time!

Mornin' chaps.

I received my drivers license a few years back and did not do any driving till a week ago. I recently received a new car and started to drive but it was more difficult than I anticipated. Most of my issues involve stop/start at intersections and inclines, and driving slow with clutch only to get into tight areas and in/out of my garage and driveway.

Any pointers?

Practice, Practice and more practice!

Have you tried having a few sips of alcohol prior to driving? it might soothe your nerves.

Actually he's correct - the correct thing to do at a robot, for example, is to put the car in neutral and pull up the handbrake. Works for both manual and auto.

I could explain why, but I'm tired now. :)

That is the K53 method. But how many of us actually do it, unless we're at an incline :D

Best advice I can give is to put an L sticker on your back window until you've mastered the finer details of driving.
If that isn't available you can make an L shape on your forehead using the thumb and index finger of your right hand, be sure to keep it there whenever a difficult situation arises to let your fellow motorists know you are still learning.

OP, I was in exactly the same position as you.. got my drivers license but took a few years before I could afford my own car. I was an extremely nervous driver, and tried to avoid driving as much as possible. When I was still in Cape Town, it wasn't so bad, as distances were short, and roads are not that busy.. which gives you the freedom to practice without much stress.

And as many have said, practice makes perfect. I now live in Gauteng.. and you gotta really know how to drive if you wanna survive here :P

Thread Revival:

I drove my car to work today. Went better than I anticipated. Gonna drive back home soon... hopefully no taxis suddenly stopping this time!

Hang on, you were the guy who made those gesuip posts last night. So you're more confident driving with a hangover? :p

:)

Not much of a hangover. I drank a litre of water in the morning and had a greasy breakfast.
