Netbeans VS Eclipse

If you guys had to choose between Netbeans or Eclipse to develop a program for a Unix environment. Which would you choose?

What would the advantages or disadvantages be for each IDE?
 
You thinking about a specific language?

I used Netbeans for Java dev and loved it.
I tried Netbeans later for PHP and disliked it. Eclipse worked better for me then.

Just a pity both of them, in my experience, were rather resource intensive.

Then I would suggest Netbeans. But that was only for Uni level, so maybe someone else has a better argument than mine? :p
 
Netbeans is "pretty", and it is very easy to get in to for a newbie to the software.
Eclipse is takes a little bit more time to get used to, but is probably the better of the two, particularly with all the available plugins etc. Not sure how netbeans is with regards to extensibility.
 
I use both, and from experience can say -- it doesn't matter.

Get the one you like the most, and spend the time to get to know the IDE. Both are just as good or just as bad as each other. They do apply a bit of a different methodology, and this has tended to push me a bit more to Eclipse than Netbeans.

But I repeat -- it's not the IDE -- it's you with the IDE. If you like Netbeans monolothic structures, go for it [everything is 'packaged' somewhere].

If you prefer the Eclipse: don't worry, I'll do it myself approach, spend the time to learn the IDE and go forth young one ...
 
I have no netbeans experience, but the integration that eclipse offers in the form of addons are priceless for me.

I am a huge Spring fanboy, so STS does it for me :)

Personally I'd go with Netbeans, unless the program is trivial/small, in which case I'll use a text editor and the command line.

I've used both in developing applications for glassfish and jboss. And I prefer netbeans above eclipse mainly because netbeans has a much simpler UI and also I found that it is much easier to use. But rather than take it on a whim why don't you make a few apps in netbeans then do the same thing in eclipse. Then whichever is better for you you will use. They are both very powerful and similar, with minor differences such as the plugins and layout etc.
 
I would definitely go with Netbeans, but just to throw a spanner in the works, I would say try IntelliJ IDEA 11, awsome IDE I just love it.
Its not free though, (You could get your boss to buy it) :D
 
Hard to say. Depends on what language you are programming. I have always preferred Eclipse for both PHP and Java programming, but lately I am actually using PHPStorm for all of my web development.

You missed the OP's 2nd post. Java.
 
fwiw, if you're looking in to doing android dev, the sdk's are geared towards eclipse. Doesn't mean you can't use another IDE tho, but it will be much easier using eclipse.
