So basically im interested in getting a notebook and ive seen one the samsung nc150 that comes with windows 7 starter compared to others that have windows xp, so which one of the 2 operating systems should i go for?

Check out: http://windows.about.com/od/windowsosversions/a/Win7Starter.htm

I never knew that Starter was exclusively for netbooks!!!!

What it Doesn't Have

Windows 7 Starter is a significantly stripped-down version of Windows 7. Here's some of what it's missing, courtesy of a Microsoft blog posting:

- Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the "Windows Basic" or other opaque themes. It also means you do not get Taskbar Previews or Aero Peek.

- Personalization features for changing desktop backgrounds, window colors, or sound schemes.

- The ability to switch between users without having to log off.

- Multi-monitor support.

- DVD playback.

- Windows Media Center for watching recorded TV or other media.

- Remote Media Streaming for streaming your music, videos, and recorded TV from your home computer.

- Domain support for business customers.

- XP Mode for those that want the ability to run older Windows XP programs on Windows 7.

I don't think the operating system should be your deciding factor when purchasing a netbook (or any computer, for that matter). There are a LOT of other deciding factors that I'd consider before operating system, such as CPU, RAM, display.

You also need to consider what you plan to do with the computer. If you need some proprietary application, then you should check what version of Windows the software vendor supports.

o yeah, the two i have in mind are more or less the same hey, just one has 7 starter and the other one has xp, so im completly lost bewteen the two, tho on windows 7 starter not being able to even change your background sucks ass

Well netbook architecture will have little variance, one of the reasons why its easier to shop around. Its not hard to find the same product from different vendors.

There are free utilities around that allowes you to change your background on windows starter. You can upgrade windows 7 to home premium (at about R600 I think). At some point MS will also give up support for XP but that could be a while still. So personally I'd rather go with Windows 7 if I had the choice.

On the kernel level there is not much more that can be done. Browsers will still be maintained but does anyone still use Internet Explorer these days - the only true vulnerability on a XP PC.

Win7 has proven to be stable release but the Starter edition is too crippled.

I really want one of the new Dell netbooks with the 11.6'' display and dual-core Atom CPUs.

You get Dual-core atom (4 virtual cores with Hyperthreading), the Intel Atom 330, and Asus make a netbook with it, the 1201.

My advice: Get something which has an 11" or 12" screen if you can. I managed to get an HP 311 for a friend of mine, it has an 11.6" screen @ 1336x768, which is brilliant compared to the 1024x600 or even 1024x576 (ugh) screens in most netbooks.

ye know, i think the days of the netbook are counted. ipad-like devices will probably take over in this market sector

The prices would need to drop first... the iPad is extremely expensive so the netbooks will still take preference there.

I'm interested in getting a netbook as well. Would you guys recommend a Samsung N130 over an MSI Wind? My budget is around 3k
There's also the Gigabyte M1022C Booktop. Even thought it's a 10.1", it's got 1366x768 instead of 1024x600

How much is that M1022C booktop going for? Like I said, 1366x768 is way better than 1024x600 if you can help it.

The MSI Wind and NC 130 look pretty much identical. I think the Samsung has slightly longer battery life.

I must disagree. I have been waiting (patiently) for Apple to enter this market. When I saw the proposition for the iPad, I decided to get a netbook and hackintosh it. Got the LG X130 and it works a charm. My main reason is I have over the years bought all my Mac software and kept most of my licenses up to date (Grrrr Adobe CS grrrr) and would not be able to use this collection on an iPad.

Now I am as mobile as I need to be with the netbook being the only expense.

3k at PC Zone... Round about R3200 everywhere else.
Suppose I can live with the battery life cos it won't be used for extended periods of time. Seems a decent trade-off for the resolution.

I'm also considering a Dell Mini 10.. It has the newer N450 processor, 1366x768 & a 6-cell battery, but I should imagine the pricing would be closer to 4k
