Netbook?

Be sure to get a dual core processor with at least 2gb of ram. Unless of course you're happy to run XP or Linux on it, instead of Windows 7. I would rather buy a laptop for the same price, unless you absolutely need the smaller form factor. Also check at Game for their weekly specials. You will often get laptops and netbooks cheaper than anywhere else, but you need to be in the store on the same morning of the start of the special. The limited stocks usually fly out fast.

You might want to also consider taking one out on contract with a data package from one of the cellular operators. They usually have really good deals, especially MTN.

Need the small form factor, it has to be mobile and easily portable. Will be used in vehicles, etc. Will keep an eye for the Game specials, thanks!

I got the LG X120 from CNA for R2000 a while ago. Has a single-core 64-bit Atom with hyper-threading, although a dual-core version is also available. It came with a 320GB hard drive and 1GB of RSm, which i replaced with 2GB. Brilliant little machine if you take off the crappy OS it comes with (Win 7 starter with tons of bloatware) and do a clean install of Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit. It has Bluetooth, Wireless N, and a webcam built-in.

Do you know if this is still available?

Thank you, am going to investigate this.

BTW, which CNA did you purchase this from? Don't see anything on their website

Centurion mall. But their website has always been very poor, they have very few items on anyways.

Are you sure you want a netbook?

Wouldn't a tablet be better? The only thing I use my netbook for these days is downloading torrents.

The main reason is that I am considering a netbook is that there will be a large amount of text being entered and speed is important. I have played with an iPad2, but it didn't work too nicely.

I belong to an emergency response unit, the netbook will be used to capture infomation in some detail at emergency scenes (primary function) and to perform other functions such as programming two-way radios on the field.

Suggestions are most welcome though.

Budget is the only issue. It is a volunteer unit, we are self-funded.

And I'm sure you know how well IT professionals get paid :(

Look at Samsung, they have matt screens and that will be important. A friend whos wife is a geologist found have matt made the difference between her being able to work on site or not. The keyboard quality is also amazing, a very important factor. You will find them in your budget.

Thank you for that tip, will look into it. Didn't know about the matt screen issue, thanks.
