Hi Guys,

I've managed to finally get Netflix and Hulu+ running at home on my PS3, with the help of the good folks on this forum.
However, I have picked up bits and pieces of information which are scattered across multiple threads, and none of them had a comprehensive guide from start to finish on how to get things running on a PS3 in particular.

NB: This method is also the most cost effective and simple - NO Paypal, NO Entropay, NO vouchers, NO BS!

With that in mind, I decided to put my 2c worth into a guide which others can hopefully put to good use, so here it goes...

The prerequisites for setting up something like this are:

1. An ADSL connection, and you will need a minimum of 50GBs, this of course depends on usage or how well your videos stream. The higher the quality (720p or even 1080p), the more bandwidth is used.
2. A PS3 console.

Step 1:

Sign up to a DNS service. I use UnoTelly, and it works perfectly.
There are others like Playmo.tv, however I experienced issues with Hulu+. My personal opinion would be to stick to the tried and trusted.

Step 2:

Identify the primary and secondary UnoTelly DNS servers you would like to use here www.unotelly.com/unodns/global.
I personally use the Cape Town one as primary [196.41.139.189] and the London one as secondary [176.58.107.53].
Make note of the IP addresses of whichever servers you choose to use.

Step 3:

Using your PS3, navigate to the Network Settings option in the menu.
Select the "Custom" option to configure your connection. Leave all items as they are, until you come to the DNS Server option - select "Manual".
Configure the DNS servers which you have chosen in Step 2.
Complete the rest of the wizard and then test the connection.
It should come up as successful, otherwise you will need to troubleshoot this.

Step 4:

From your PS3 browser, navigate to quickstart.unotelly.com
This will confirm if you have setup UnoDNS correctly.

Step 5:

Setup a new PSN account, specifying your country as US. Don't worry, no validation is done on the address.
If you don't want to take any chances, you can go here www.fakenamegenerator.com to generate a valid US address and name.

Step 6:

Using your PS3, sign into your new US PSN account.
Once you have signed in, navigate to the "TV Services/Channels" option in the menu. You will see now that you have the options of downloading the Netflix and Hulu+ applications (in addition to a few others like Amazon).
Download both applications.

Step 7:

Open up the Netflix application, and follow the instructions to sign up. You should get the option of a free month's trial.
Be sure to put in a US address when prompted.
When it comes to the to credit card details, put in your SA credit card information, however, put in a US ZIP code - Google US ZIP code and you will get plenty of hits. Pick one.
You can try and play a video from Netflix to confirm that this is working.

Step 8:

Open up the Hulu+ application, and follow the instructions to sign up. You should be presented with an 8 day trial option.
Again, as before, put in your SA credit card details and ensure you put in a US ZIP code. If I remember correctly, Hulu+ doesn't ask for an address.
Now try and play a video to confirm that it is working.

Congratulations! You now have access to thousands of series and movies. Hello Netflix, goodbye DSTV!

Troubleshooting:

From time to time, your videos will not play on either service.
Go to quickstart.unotelly.com and it will most likely prompt you to "Change your IP address". Click on the "Update IP address" button, and it will confirm that all is well now.
When you try to stream again, everything should work!

Hulu/Netflix application corrupted after the update?
Remove the UnoTelly DNS from your PS3 network configuration. Once done, update the application again. Then change your DNS back to the UnoTelly servers, and it should work again.
Thanks to Speed_Demon for this tip!

Updating IP address not working?
Sometimes simply updating your IP address using the normal procedure will not work.
When you check your networks, you might notice a 66.x.x.x IP address.
If you investigate further, this will mostly likely resolve to www.google.com. I'm not quite sure how this works, but this is another one of Netflix's techniques to shun users of services like UnoTelly.
How do I fix this?
Simply browse to www.whatismyip.com and confirm your IP address.
Once you've made a note of your current IP address, hit the "Networks" button on UnoTelly, and then proceed to manually enter your IP address at the bottom.
Once done, hit Add Network and you're done!

Please let me know if anyone has any hints/suggestions/constructive criticism to add.

Happy Streaming!

Thanx a lot for doing this

It is not only going to help SA, but is also applicable to any country outside US. I think this guide is going to appear on a lot of forums

Thanks for the kind words guys, only a pleasure.
Glad I could help someone. It's frustrating when the info is available, but it's hard to find. That's what spurred me on.

Thanks for the guide, I am thinking of doing this but im only running a 1mbs uncapped line. I wonder what will the quality be like. Might be worht it to just try it during free trial and see

I'd say go for it. Even UnoTelly gives you a free trial as well, which I had to do to confirm that Hulu+ works with them.
Both applications have an automatic setting which will adjust the quality of your stream depending on the amount of available bandwidth you have.

Thanks for this... Has anyone tried the Sony Movie rental service on PS3?

OK cool set this up last night but the quality is just poor and needs to buffer alot. It could be due to my wifi netwrok. but 1mb does not seem enough for this sort of service.

Which ISP are you with? Remember, some ISPs shape the hell out of your line.
And yes, while I am no expert on the subject, I reckon you should have a 2Mb uncapped line at least.

I've got a 4Mb MWeb line and it works beautifully. My stream has probably buffered around two or three times since using the service. The only real wait is when you start the video.
Also, your poor quality is automatically adjusted by the amount of bandwidth available on your line. Due to low bandwidth, you will not stream at high quality. I've managed to get videos to play at full 1080p. For the most part, they play at 720p flawlessly.

Im with afrihost, so streaming should take preference.... need to look into upgrading my line

Mine buffered at the beg, after a few minutes so was quite a crappy experience.

The content seems awesome though

Hmm... ok, hopefully it will improve once you upgrade.

If you do upgrade sometime soon... please reply on the forum or PM me to let me know how it goes. I've been thinking of moving to them (I'm basically paying for a 4Mb uncapped when I could get a 10Mb uncapped with them for the same price).

I'd really like to know what their performance is like.
Yeah, I'm really chuffed with the content. I personally don't really go gaga over Hulu+. The fact that they don't even keep an entire current season of a series is quite irritating. Netflix just seems to constantly build on their library, whereas with Hulu I see that episodes have an expiry attached to them.

Anyone having issues with Hulu+ on PS3? I tried updating to V1.08 (mandatory update). After the download completes, the Install fails and corrupts the app. :(

EDIT: Figured it out, I changed the DNS on the PS3 back to what it was (i.e. not the unotelly DNS) and the install worked. Thereafter I changed the DNS to unotelly so I could watch Hulu and Netflix.
@shreez, maybe this is a fix worth mentioning?

Hi Speed,

Glad you got it working. I've thankfully never experienced any such issues, but sure - it's definitely worth a mention!
I'll update the guide shortly.

@ Speed_Demon Ok... I've updated the Troubleshooting section - have a gander and let me know if it makes sense.
Thanks for the input.

It looks geographically closer :D
Honestly, that is the only reason. However, it is my secondary server, so primary lookups are still quick.

I thought as much. :p

We have a direct link to London, then into Europe.
If primary is down your lookups could lag out a bit. Recommend you change to London.

Nice guide BTW

Really a blonde moment why I didn't think of it that way! haha! Thanks Mike, good point. I'm actually feeling quite daft right now :o
