Hi All

I need some advice. Is there a ISP out there is that will not punish you for using and paying for Netflix?

We recently lost our media server (lightning strike) and decided to sign up to Netflix to give it a shot. It was going great until Telkom (line provider and ISP) decided that we should be running at dialup speed for our streaming. I do play online games but have never been affected by this. Does Netflix really use that much bandwidth that they will slow us to turtlenet?

Just to give more info, we have a 2MB line that averages speedtest at 1.7mb/s and now we are at 0.3mb/s. When I asked Telkom if there is anything I can do in the future they simply replied "Dont download and stream so much".

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Had the same problem with telkom when we streamed Hulu and Netflix. Changed to Mweb, same problem. Now we are with crystalweb 4mb uncapped premium account and have had no problems. We do about 400gig per month.

@NorthPole Combined usage is 106Gig and colour of the bar is orange.

@MoniqueP Will have a look at crystalweb's prices

Netflix and video streaming will max out your line in general, and can consume many gigabytes a day.

AFAIK Telkom starts to throttle 2mbps uncapped accounts in the early 100GB range, but if you're in the orange you should still be getting full line speed.

You should probably look at premium uncapped accounts with higher threshold limits.

This. Or upgrade to 4meg. The thresholds on 4meg higher even if you don't go premium.

@genetics Telkom only seems to be throttling video streaming at the moment. Will definitely look at changing to a premium account. We use on average about 120Gig per month but this is the first that they have throttled us.

or just them to upgrade your account to 4meg

If you don't mind, set your streaming to low-bandwidth usage... it is about DVD quality. I find it good enough for series and cartoons.
That limits it to 700mb/hour... it saves a lot.

Was think of upgrading the line to 4meg in anyway. Afrihost has a good deal on a 4meg premium account. Can anyone vouch for their service?

@GoB we stream Netflix through a ps3 so not sure if we can set the quality of streaming.

With afrihost I'm not sure uncapped makes much sense. A 4mb 100+100gb capped account will be cheaper, plus currently none of the data you use between midnight and 6pm counts towards your bundle.

You set it in your account settings, it carries over even if you go set it on your PC.

Edit: Account settings > Playback settings.
Actually noticed now that I am on "Low - 0.3GB/h"!

This. I have Telkom LTE, my "line speed" varies from 15Mbps to 45Mbps. I struggle to use my 50GB per month.

Just sign up for a Bolton package from afrihost.

I'm on Telkom 4mbps through Telkom and average around 250GB per month - never get throttled.

Telkom's "soft cap" is a lot higher than most other ISP's, but then again you pay a bit more.

@GoB Thanks will set it that way and see if it works

@genetic will upgrade and see how it goes for a month

Thanks all for the advice
