Hi all

I just wanted to know at what line speed doesn't Netflix and hulu buffer during an episode. I have 4 mb line with Telkom as isp and still it buffers every 7 minutes for about a minute' I have tried through wireless as well as with a Ethernet cable.

Speed test shows I get average 3.7 mb with several tests.

I have also used unotelly and unblock-us as DNS servers.

I have disabled HD on Netflix and set hulu to auto.

What else can I check or do differently?

Any help or advise would be appreciated as its very, very irritating

Try to stream the clip Example Short 23.976 from US Netflix. This will show the current bitrate in the top left corner. Watch the entire clip to get an idea of your streaming speed. You should hopefully see the bitrate increase from 235 to 350 to 560 to 750 etc.

Netflix should never buffer. It auto adjusts quality.

Yeah same here - I've been loving my netflix and hulu on my uncapped 4meg line with Telkom Internet for a year now, then Telkom did me a "favor" and upgraded me to 10meg, and now I can't watch anything that streams, not netflix, hulu, YouTube or iTunes - the buffering is so bad that I get so irritated that I will break something if I have to watch for more than 5 minutes.

So had to get my dstv reconnected and I said good bye to streaming - somehow I don't think they gonna ever fix it - they just in it to make money - as much as possible - and clearly streaming is not high on their priority anymore. I hate them.

In willing to pay up to R1600 per month for Internet. I use about 60-80gb per month. Any suggestions?

Why did you cancel ADSL instead of just trying another ISP?

:wtf: :erm:

Hey no sorry didn't cancel adsl I still have it - I just have no desire to stream
Anymore!

My exchange is on corner William Nicol and main rd in Bryanston - I think it's really old infrastructure and the exchange is oversubscribed or something.

What ISP would you recommend?

I'm not a heavy user but want thing to be fast when I want to use it!

I suspect it might be related to the Telkom issues, but you tube streams in HD without issues.the example short never goes above 235 and buffers the whole time, on my tablet and HTPC

OK. I did a lot of tests last night and today. It seems to be congestion on the exchange by me. Between 3pm and about 1030 it struggles. I did the example shortntest and it never goes above 235 and buffers the whole time. I just did it now again (1145 pm) and I get 3000 kbps nitrate at 720p. Is there a way I can get Telkom to look at the problem, or am I stuck with this issue

Log a fault with them. They'll have it fixed somewhere between 2 weeks and 2 years.

Drop TelkomZA a PM and post on their Twitter handle.

I had similar issues last year when I switched to 4MB in around June. From 3pm till around 11pm my speedtests results dropped steadily from 3.47Mb to sub 1Mb (4Mb line) but after 11pm it was running full tilt again.

TelkomZA confirmed that the backhaul uplinks were congested and they were going to escalate the problem.

Around November I started to notice that after 3pm my speedtests were coming back at 3.47Mb and now I hardly have any issues with congestion.
Cant say what was done to fix the problem but I'm just glad its fixed.

Next step waiting for my exchange to be upgraded to VDSL.

Telkom is the problem here. Also having buffering issues when using Telkom.

When I use afrihost or mweb, everything streams HD.

Ditch Telkom asap, my data is ending with them on the 2nd.

Drop the uncapped and get a package with afrihost for say 50-100gigs and a 4/10meg line. You should then get better speeds and zero shaping/throttling

I have this package with afrihost and get 7meg, can stream HD youtube no problem anytime of the day.

had an uncapped 4meg package before which then only gives you say 3 -3.5 meg max.. i then too had a problem with streaming.

best of all this only cost R697 including the line (10meg) R1600 ? sheesh you could get 20meg for that price if your exchange supported it
