(Netflix) The Queen's Gambit

Only new Netflix original series actually worth watching.
That and the Haunting of Bly Manor.

(Avoid Haunting of Hill house. Dreadfully bad)
 
Really enjoyed it. The chess part was also very accurate. Susan Polgar was involved and on set a few times

Hill house used typical loud noises, sudden appearance, jump scares.
A jump scare, is not a scare. It's just your mind reacting to a sudden loud noise or pop in front of your face.
It's unintelligent and benign.

Bly manor used subtelty and is far superior.
 
I just finished this.

I was also impressed with the series from an artistic perspective. The camera work was especially interesting.

I was a bit disappointed with the ending though. It seemed too predictable. Prodigy pwns everyone, takes on undefeatable foe and wins.

That being said, like @Foxhound5366 I'm also starting to get itchy to play chess again. I did it in school and enjoyed it. I just have very little energy these days after I'm done with everything I need to do, and chess requires thinking since I'm not a drug-fuelled prodigy...

But that's what made it great for me. That wasn't the ending. The little ending scene added so much emotional depth. Was it just me or were the eyes exactly like the caretaker? I think that was the intention.

Hmmm... I see what you mean. I didn't pick that aspect up though you are probably right in the intention.

I didn't get much from that last scene. My wife is from a former Soviet republic, and immediately she laughed at the fact that someone was walking around in the cold months in Moscow wearing all white. She'd become dirty almost instantly.

Lots of stariki [Russian for "old men"] playing chess in the park is an accurate thing, but I doubt they'd have been able to recognise the American woman on sight, media wasn't very open in the Soviet Union. So suspension of disbelief for me was somewhat hard.

I just thought that the last tournament was a bit predictable. She blazes into the Soviet Union like some kind of chess-Rambo and just defeats everyone.
