Netflix wants to stop password sharing

Setup a VPN to a Mikrotik and let everyone use the same IP...
That means that the person you're tunelling to needs good enough upload, so no one on ADSL can do it and most on mobile will avoid due to data charges.

I thought Netflix specifically prices their plans based on how many simultaneous streams your subscription will support across however many devices you want to use? So if you want four simultaneous streams you buy the premium plan.

Why would it matter then who you give your password to? You paid for 1,2 or 4 streams depending on the subscription and it's up to you to manage who has access to your account.

My package allows me to connect 5 devices. It is part of their agreement, so I do not see the issue.

The subscription covers 1,2 or 4 streams within the same household so if all viewers live in the same household or there's a kid at varsity that's generally acceptable but if you have adults sharing the same account but don't share the same residence then that's what Netflix is trying to curtail. They're probably more interested in the 4 stream accounts being used by four different adults living in their own separate residences.

Password-sharing amongst friends and family members poses a problem for the business models of streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

So... My wife and kids will not be able to use the one account on their devices going forward? I'm sure as **** not paying monthly fees for each person in the family.

Off to the high seas we go then?

Obviously.
With fibre, that is a non issue.
Yeah, still a minority, plus people have to set it up.
All they need to do is make it difficult enough that the majority won't bother, not cost effective to go after a tiny group.

My whole household uses the same account on diferrent devices. Not always off the same internet. The second they do this I'll cancel and just start downloading movies again.

Yep, myself and some friends share a password, the moment they stop us from sharing a passwords, I'm done with Netflix

I suspect they won’t worry with the premium accounts as much as they will for ‘cheap’ accounts. In the past they check which devices have the same profile login on multiple devices watching the same vid multiple times.

Ie if you using one profile on 1-2 devices regularly without much repeats.. they don’t flag account. So if you share a profile and watch the same vids consistently on different devices..

"Netflix is working on plans to stop subscribers from sharing their account passwords, Independent reports."
...
"Peters added that Netflix does not have any immediate plans to curb the practice."

So which is it?

If netflix had any plans to stop sharing, why does it provide profiles and ask who's watching?
At home we have different family members and we use different devices.

  • Our Basic Plan lets you stream TV shows and movies from Netflix on one device at a time in standard definition (SD). This plan also lets you download titles to one phone or tablet.
  • Our Standard Plan lets you stream TV shows and movies from Netflix on two devices at the same time and in high definition (HD) when available. This plan also lets you download titles to two phones or tablets.
  • Our Premium Plan lets you stream TV shows and movies from Netflix on four devices at the same time and in high definition (HD) and ultra high definition (UHD) when available. This plan also lets you download titles to four phones or tablets.

I don't think Netflix will push it too much. It grows their subscription and for some it's good to share it with your elderly parents so they don't need to worry about the bill.

And it's nice to switch from TV to mobile if you're away somewhere. ie Guest house. It's like taking your DSTV with, just you don't need a satellite dish or decoder.

Keep it the way it is Netflix. It works like a charm, and you will get a lot more subscribers.

Well exactly, I though that was the point of their service offering. You can have multiple profiles and select a plan based on how many streams are going to be simultaneously watching. This whole article doesn't really make sense as it's inconsistent with the way they've deliberately structured the service, and to be honest the simplicity of the model without having to worry about device limits etc á la Showmax / DSTV it's one of the main reasons for their appeal.

I travel quite a bit and use Netflix in various locations (airports, hotels, various locations via mobile phone hot spot). It would be interesting to see how they handle my usage.

A lot of people will probably do this.

Sometimes I take a tablet with if I know that I will need to wait a while somewhere.

That is not going to be on the usual IP range, but it is still me using it.
