Hi guys,

I currently have an old Netgear DG634 modem/router. It does not show all the fancy figures for line attenuation and noise margins and I'd really like to get a nice modem/router that does. I was looking at the Netgear DG834Gv5.

Does anyone have any experience with this router/modem?

It looks like I can get a ZyXel P660HW-T1v2 or the D-link DSL-2650U ADSL modem + wireless router + 4port 10/100 switch. I'm tempted to go for the DLINK?

I would not purchase it, as it has several bugs with the Telkom firmware, especially wireless network access with Atheros wireless cards (most netbooks). Rather purchase a Netgear DGN2000 +/- R 1 K (if you are in Cape Town I will supply it at cost) or a Linksys modem or should you wish to go the Telkom route rather purchase a Billion 800 VGT.

Michael

I can vouch for the DGN2000. Been using it at home for the last 4 months....

It also shows you the ADSL line stats... See here -

I have both the DGN2000 and the DG834Gv5 . My DG834Gv5 is the Telkom branded one and the DGN2000 i bought retail. One thing that stands out between my particular 2 routers,

The DSL sync + connect is like <5seconds on thE DGN2000, for some reason the DG834Gv5 can take like 30+ seconds to sync+connect.

Now i don't know if my DG834Gv5 is dying or whether it's just plain slow/buggy ...but the DGN2000 is just plainly faster when connecting/reconnecting/syncing.

Plus the wireless capabilities on the DGN2000 is much better too...

Can also vouch for Netgear DGN2000, been using for it for 12 months now, excellent!!!

Well no one has answered my question on whether or not these modems show the line information such as Noise Margins and Line Attenuation. Either way, I've just ordered the D-Link DSL-2650U. It seems to have everything and cost me less than R700. Not bad in my books.

I received my new D-Link modem/router today. It's got 2 USB ports that allow for 3G USB devices to be plugged in as well. So it's not JUST ADSL :) This seems like a really good modem/router, and for less than R700? Bargain!

Upgrade to DGTeam firmware. Netgear DG834 series is awesome. Very powerful router and with this custom firmware you can do way more. you'd be wasting your money on a new router imho...
