Netgear USB Drive Sharing Read only problem

Hi
I have a Netgear DG834GUv5 and connected my external hard drive via the USB port.
I have set it up under USB Drive settings
I can access the drive but it’s got Read only rights on it somehow that I can change. I have tried the FTP route as well where you can assign read and write rights.

Anyone got this working?
 
NTFS is the problem, with Fat32 it works fine.
How can I get around the 32GB partition limit

Hiya,

Look for a little app called guiformat that will allow you to format fat32 > 32G (the partition needs to exist beforehand - it will happily reformat an existing NTFS partition :) ).

As an aside I have also been trying to configure my usb share and the Wins shares work fine but I can't access the share from the Internet via ftp as the docs suggest...

It works!! Thanks that app sorted it out. I lost my manual for the router and the one I downloaded of the net got nothing on USB drive settings. How are you trying to connect to the drive from the net?

I tried to add a firewall rule to point it to the router but it does not want to take its own IP as an address. I know when I was playing with remote Desktop and wanted to test it from my laptop through DynDNS back to my Desktop it did not want to work, I tried it through a 3G connection and it worked.

Let me know then we see if we can sort it out will be cool if I can access the drive from the net.
 
If I use Cobain backup to back files from my laptop to the drive after about 10 min the router locks up you cant browse the drive or the internet.
 
I was using the network share and created a map drive to the shared folder. If I use this the drive locks. I switched to FTP and had no problem, using Filezilla to speed up the process a bit.

As far as I can tell the usb enabled router is a Telkom specific version - hence you'll need to use the hcom firmware if you want to keep the usb stuff working.

My original problem was that after I set up the ftp share, I could access the ftp site from the LAN but not the WAN. I know that ftp is not being blocked by the ISP 'cause when I create an internal ftp site and allow it as a forward through the firewall it works perfectly - so it seems like the firewall blocks direct access to its WAN interface (except for the LAN and its return connections).

I managed to figure out how to telnet into the router so I could go and check the firewall in detail, except the latest version of the firmware has a very crippled version of busybox. An app called foxconn is used to manage the firewall but it too has effectively been disabled, so I can't check anything.

I also had problems with bulk data transfer via samba. My router was hanging completely after a few minutes.

I don't mind using ftp but even filezilla's excellent client is not *that* friendly to a 6-year old ;-). I don't want the kids to have to xfer files - just use them online.

I'm toying with the idea of mailing Hcom to get them to release a later version firmware to fix the problem but I've basically given up on the router share idea - looking at putting down an iSCSI linux box.

Same problem here. After a few minutes it locks up. Small files are fine but anything over about 200MB and it locks up. FTP works 100% fine though. Anyone solve the problem? Is new firmware available? I have another device with NAS storage and the router is doing the same to that device. Is it a setting that needs changing. Duxbury is no help at all.
 
I could only get it to work with the FTP, been looking for a firmware upgrade as well but can’t find anything on Netgear site. I have a dedicated server no that shares and backup so not to stressed about this anymore

I sorted it out eventually. I kept getting "network name is no longer available" after a few minutes with large file transfers. My NAS device & the Netgear's USB-connected-HDD would both give this error when transferring files larger than +- 200MB. So it is related to SAMBA network shares and how Windows operates with SAMBA. Although it works correctly via FTP & you can transfer files easily between Windows PC's on the LAN, it is only when it is Windows Networking to SAMBA that the network error occurs. So, it turns out two small Windows adjustments solved it for me ( In this case I am using Windows XP Pro SP2) Not sure which other Windows versions also have this SAMBA networking issue. Appears to work fine now with 600MB files, Will try some >1GB another time.

In my case (using WinXP Pro SP2) what worked was installing IPv6:

Also I made sure that "Use Simple File Sharing" was UNchecked under folder options in Windows Explorer.

BUT on Sunday it seemed as though the success I has achieved on Saturday could not be repeated on Sunday. Even repeated exact same actions with exact same files to test. Will check again when I have free time. Let me know if that works for you and whether it remains working for you.
 
I am on Windows 7, will have a look what it does later this week and will let you know. What firmware version are you on?

Let me know how that goes. It may solve the network SAMBA transfers permanently or there may be one more adjustment depending on your configuration. Looks as though I may have that final piece in the puzzle, will test this week & update you on how it goes.
 
Mine still locks up with Win 7, but I lose my internet connection as well, so it looks like the whole router freezes. I am on the same firmware as you.

Under network connections, which connections do you have listed? List all of them, and include which are enabled and which are disabled...
