Hi, I'm having a problem with a new Netgear N150 router (my long-serving telkom billion died). I will try and explain so as to make sense but its driving me crazy!!

I have two ISP accounts - one with Imagine (10mbps after hours but useless in office hours), and another with openweb that I use instead in the daytime (1mbps). I used to simply change the login/pass on the Billion router web interface and it switched within 5-10 seconds max and all was well.

Now when I try doing that this Netgear router I get a red light on the Internet symbol and no connection. After much frustration and back and forth between ISP and Telkom (thinking I couldn't connect and something was wrong) a factory reset of the Netgear (and subsequent re-doing all parameter settings) to the desired ISP got the connection working.

When time came to switch, same problem. Current ISP (1) was fine, but new one (2) - red light. Change login back to ISP 1 - green light. Factory reset. Change settings and login for ISP 2 - green light. Try to change login again to (previously working) ISP 1 - red light!

Everytime I need to change ISP I only have success with a factory reset and its attendant re-doing of all paramaters.

As a workaround I did two backups - one for each ISP while the modem was in the working/connected state. Now I restore one or the other to switch ISP's this seems to work 4 out of 5 times.

Surely this must be simpler? Ideally I should type in a new login and password, click Apply and within 10 seconds I should be connected to that account. It worked perfectly that way with the Billion.

Anyone have any help, hints or theories on solving this problem? Thanks

It might be that you have to switch off your router for a few minutes, before you start it up with the new details.

Why not do a PPPoE connection?

Go to Network settings and click on "Create a new connection or network"/ "Connect to the Internet' / "Setup new Connection anyway"/ ...

Choose Broeadband(PPPoE) connection and type in your 2nd ISP details.

This will create a connection and you can put the shortcut on the desktop.
So whenever you want to make use of the 2nd connection, just click it or you can find it on the Taskbar under "Network"

This way you do not have to put the details in the router.

Hi RoMark.
I have Macs and iOS devices here. They are connected on a wifi LAN via an Apple Airport router (the Netgear is far too slow as a wireless LAN hub) which connects via ethernet to the Netgear and then it to telkom. The only way to switch the ISPs that I can see is to do it on the router (web interface). The Apple Airport router is on bridge mode. Any idea how I should be setting that up to be able to choose the ISP further upstream (on a Mac preferably)?

iphones/pad/MacPro/mac mini/Macbook-------[wifi]------>Airport(Bridge)----[ethernet]----->Netgear----[phonecable]--->Telkom

The only device that seems to have the place for login/pass is the Netgear modem

Hi typrat.

Sorry, I don't know. I have never touched a Mac or iOS.
I'm sure that someone will be able to help though.
Lots of clever and friendly members here.
:)

Hope you get sorted.

Edit:
One of the members (Pada) wrote software called Traffic Splitter. It was to make use of Local and International bandwidth.

It was written for Windows, but maybe you can google for similar software? You would then be able to enter more than 1 ISP's details and just need to switch the primary ISP.
I'm sure there would be an easier way though.

I just don't know what it is.
:)

Not sure if any of these links might give more insight:

It seems that you can setup more than 1 connection? I assume you can just create short cut for each one you create?
