I have 2 computers set up on my router and when i copy files to either computer, it only copies at a speed of 11 mb, how do i make this faster, i thought network cards can run up to 100 mb per second?

what is limiting my network speed?

Many things.

1. A network card which is manually set to 10-base
2. Switch/hub which can only do 10-base
3. A faulty switch or network card
4. Incorrect wiring sequence on an RJ-45 connector
5. Damaged network cable
6. Antivirus program scanning for incoming programs/files
7. Electromagnetic radiation interfering with network equipment
8. Windows. :p

1. Changed it from auto to 100 both pc's
2. Adsl2+ modem, so should suppert speeds higher than 11 meg
3. Router is working 100%, 1 network card is brand new, 1 is almost a year old, seems fine though, no errors
4. Double checked the rj-45 sequence is fine, and is about 3 months old
5. see 4
6. No anti virus on either system
7. i have no idea what this means...lol
8 1 system windows 7 and 1 vista, was doing same thing when both was on vista ultimate

check the hard disk controller settings in device manager to make sure they are all running on DMA mode.

how do you chance the speeds of your network card?

device manager right click properties on your network card, click the advances tab, then under speed an duplex will open a bar on the right you can change it to 100 full duplex and other things

You said no antivirus.

What is the status of the network activity when you aren't copying anything. Is the network very active, or not?

Do a netstat -e on the command-line and check whether you have any errors or not.

Also, what ponder said. :o

actually i just checked now, and i actually have a gigabit lan card. thats 10/100/1000, and i am only copying at 11 megs..something is up here

Are you saying 11megabytes/s or 11megabits/s?
If its 11megabytes/s then thats almost 90megabits/s..which would be just about right for a 100mb lan

11MB/s is to be expected if your network runs at 100Mbit/s, as 11MB/s X 8 = 88Mbit/s. In fact, you shouldn't consistently expect more than 12MB/s on a 100Mbit/s.

If your network is running at 1,000Mbit/s (has to be supported by your NIC, cable and router) then something is amiss.

i have done a check to see network activity and nothing is happening when both computers are idle, network seems clean, just that 11 MB..lol is maximum speed

11Mbit/s would roughly translate to 1.3MB/s transfer between PCs.

I'll hazard a guess that your router only supports 100Mbit/s Ethernet.

EDIT: Just checked, I get 11.6MB/s transfer (92.8Mbit/s) on my home 100Mbit/s network.

Mine runs at 11 MB/second between Windows 7 and XP... which is about normal.

but it is also supposed to be running at Gigabit speeds

both cards and the switch are all gigabit.

In windows you can try and force 100Mb full duplex on both machines or play with the settings...worked for me with similar problem.
cntrl pannel > Network connections >right click LAN connection > properties > Configure button > Advanced > Link speed/duplex mode...prob on auto, force it to 100Mb full

Oh my Im slow...10 posts while I was typing :)

This can likely all be explained by you answering a very simple question: Is your network running at 100Mbit/s or 1Gbit/s? You can check by going to the Network And Sharing Center and clicking on Local Area Connection if you are on Windows Vista/Windows 7.

ok so i understand now that 100 megabit ethernet will only give me speeds i am seeing now, so it is normal then. thanks guys. for helping me understand this.

still i will try the direct link tomorrow, and check if the speed increase
