Guys, my compnany needs a network drive just for 10 people. Basically we wanna back-up all our data.

They have tasked me with this one and I dont know where to start (never done it before).

I would appreciate some assistance (if possible) w.r.t the capacity/ price ranges/ service providers/ and so forth.

Much appreciated

Sounds like you need a NAS

A NAS is basically some hard disks, available on your network. You can purchase stand alone NAS servers which can get quite expensive, or you can build your own!

Find yourself an old P3 or P4 system, and stick some good sized IDE or SATA drives in there, add a network card, 256mb ram and bobs your aunty!

Once you have the system built and ready to roll, go get yourself a copy of FreeNAS!

I hope this is what you meant, and not a network drive out on the internet somewhere? That would probably be very expensive, and also, very very slow (thanks to the poor state of our internet connectivity in S.A)

You can also point My Documents to a place on a "server" (PC that no one uses and has sufficient space). Windows will synchronize and log off. All data will be backed up. On the PC and on the "server".

I can also recommend freenas. How much data do you want to backup? How often?
If its not too mich get yourself a 4/8gb memory stick or a DVD writer.

This is for the company guys. Money is not really an issue here, I just need places where I can get quotations. Every employee (about 10) will be required to do regular backups. So, I think about 500GB or so...

500Gb? for 10 employees?...

Even if each oke is doing 10 full backups of their important info, WTF do you guys do to have 5gb's of data for each employee?

Look dude, I did mention that I dont know jerk about this tuff (price/ capacity/ etc), if u can advice me on a reasonable storage capacity to get and where I can get quotations not to make such comments cause it doesnt help me at all. Otherwise, thanks...

Sorry.. didn't mean for it to come out like that.... was more kind of shock that something could generate that much data for 10 users... in an impressed kinda way

First off, you need to kinda figure out how much data from each user you need to backup...

No servers to backup or anything like that?

Once you've got the numbers for the data you're gonna backup, then my safe bet is quadruple that size to cater for future growth.
