Hi

Since Friday I have been having intermittent though frequent network connectivity issues.
I have a SOHO setup with wirelessly connected server and laptop as well as several wired connected devices including a laptop and they all show the same symptoms.
A ping test will work then time out for several seconds then resume (local devices and remote websites)
I have had my ISP (WebAfrica) reset the link, rebooted the router and indeed, rebooted all my computers and I still get the same problem.

I am now looking at the router (Netgear 834GT) and can see now issues with it. Done a factory reset and restore and still, I get the same results.

Prior to Friday everything was fine and the issue is common between wired and wireless devices. I have even switched off my cordless handset thinking that may be a possible cause.

Has anyone seen something similar or can offer me any trouble shooting tips?

Try another power supply of the same voltage/amps/polarity.

Sounds like it's the router, the cordless would only cause clashes with the wireless portion of the router if the frequencies are close, try changing the channel.

If you can get hold of another router try that.

Thanks for the tip regarding the power supply. Its about the only think I havent looked at!
Failing that I think a new router.

WTF?

Check your SNR and Attenuation on your ADSL line first. It could be the link between you and Telkom failing every couple of minutes that is causing this. I had the same issues where it would cut out. The physical connection to the ISP never cut off but the modem kept resyncing (I have the exact same modem). Nothing Web Africa can do about it. Telkom's side (at the exchange)

AcidRaZor, I did try raising the SNR to 110% but this did not change the result so I changed it back to 100%. Not sure about the attenuation though.

One thing I forgot to mention, if I run a ping of say www.webafrica.co.za in background, the network dropouts seem to happen noticeably less frequently. Not sure if this indicative of any issue?

I've been having the same problem since 17Feb11 and pinging the hell out of Telkom helps quite a bit - I have reported it 3 times and escalated it once, without any luck - I have now cancelled my debit order to Telkom at my bank and will be getting my Cell C 12x5GB stick - Telkom can now go and fark themselves!

If anyone is interested I fixed the problem. After much reading up on line quality and investigating SNR I discovered I have an amazing line. I think the exchange must be in my roof or something!
So I went through the process of backing up the router, factory reset and then re-flash to a slightly different version of the driver (Netgear CG834PN) which was ....26, previously it was ....23o.
Then I did a restore, I also lowered the SNR to 95% which gave me a slight speed improvement according to speedtest.net.
So far so good. The wired and wireless connections have been without hitch for some 18 hours.
