Network Inventory Software?

Preferably free.

Our database is not up and running yet, nor our server.

So I need something that will let me inventory Network Settings and Software.

At the moment our network is dynamic, de-centralised. Mostly Windows XP Home PCs (8 Computers, two of them laptops).

Eventually the network will incorporate a server and our financial software, inventory system and customer database.

Anybody got any ideas?

Main reason I am asking is because I sometimes get IP conflicts or forget to upgrade some software.

I don't want to go fixed IP yet... (mainly because of the laptops).

We are a small business and I am all the IT they have. So I want to keep it simple. Thanks.

Look at Spiceworks

I use it at my school, it scans all 83 machines, and picks up all the software. I'm not even scratching the surface of what it's capable of.

It will soon become second nature to look the results of your scans and take action ahead of time, like when a printer's toner cartridge is running low. Then when it gives out, the replacement is already there, and everybody thinks you can read minds. :)
