Hi All.

Noob here so please be patient.

I need to monitor and restrict the internet and wifi usage at my business premises.

I have about 15 computers mostly hardwired and everyones cellphones connected to the network. about 20 employees

I have an uncapped line 10mbps.

using a Dlink DSL- G225 router & a Tenda wifi extender (which is hardwired)

My issue is my usage has gone up tremendously & my line Is really slow throughout the day. Once everybody has left I'm up and running again.
Ive held meeting with staff and even given a warning to 1 staff member as he was downloading porn on his PC.
The solutions ive googled came up with me buying a program such as Solar Winds or the like.

Or alternatlvely setting up the QoS on my router and Scheduling ban on websites.

My question is: Is there a free (I'm cheap) solution such as Solar winds that can help me identify the culprits who are downloading movies and the like on my network or do I have to go the paid route?

Hope this sums it up

Thanks Again.!

Quite a few free options.

https://www.untangle.com/

But you'll need to run it on an old PC or Mini-PC with two network cards and have it act as your gateway and routing device so traffic passes "through" it.

Simplest way is to put the Router into Bridged Mode so it's a Modem only and then put the PPPoE details into Untangled for it to dial out.

Then connect the internal side to your switch and/or Access Point.

Other options are...

https://opnsense.org/

http://www.simplewallsoftware.com/

There are more but these are the user friendlier less hardcore options.

Have looked around online and cannot find if Simplewall supports UPNP. Can anyone using it advise me if it does.

Why do you need this on a firewall outbound to the internet? Your router should take care of local uPNP access, so if your router doesn't support it, I'm afraid you don't have uPNP, with or without Simplewall. The firewall/gateway would be used to access and control your internet...

Well, that's a feature you do not want. You need to open ports on the firewall, not allow the firewall to open ports automatically.
So don't worry about the UPNP part.

If the DLink supports SNMP then you could get some stats...
Setup a trail of Solarwinds NPM or any other software and specify your router to send stats to that... you will probably not see what they are doing, but you should at least see what IP is using the most bandwidth

TP Link SNMP setup, just check yours..

It is a home network, and UPnP makes it easier for torrent clients and some other software I am using.

I am using Pfsense at the moment and it supports UPnP, so I will stick with it.
