Network problems in Pretoria

Thanks IC now I understand the problem at home, because I dont have 3G but only GPRS at home. I am still learning about this wireless connectivity environment, but it appears that 99% of the public is ignorant ( my informal market research) and is persuaded by good advertising deceiving people by selling "up to maximum speeds" and not promising dedicated bandwith, but bandwith availability in small print.

A purple LED implies more than one LED is on, not a correct state for the card to be in. In the FAQ you'll see the various colours / flashes and their meaning.

Your Novatel card is on Rev 12, the current 'official' version. Some more questions, if you don't mind: :)

1) Can you check the VMC software version?

2) How do you normally recover from the 'purple LED' situation?

3) Are you using a GPRS-only profile or a 'preferred' profile?

PM me your physical address and contact details, if you don't mind. Maybe the local guys can do some fine tuning to get the 3G footprint to reach to your house. I assume you're not getting any 3G signal at home?

We're also working on some high-gain antennas for marginal areas.

I am a little confused, by not finding the meaning of LED colours/flashes in the FAQ
Can you kindly guide me where to get the information

Seems to be better :D
but let me give it a stres test for a week :)

Did you guys boot IS?

No, not at all, just supplemented with more options.

I'd like to see the throughput reports from both the Telkom site as well as FTP from smtp.vodacom.co.za.

It is very bad again

Here are my tests from Moreleta Park

Smtp.vodacom.co.za test:

226 Transfer complete.
ftp: 3363328 bytes received in 903.14Seconds 3.72Kbytes/sec.

Telkom Test:
System to slow to do a Telkom test

Same here very slow been disconnected more than 3 times now... Ping times outs...slow responses.. Fearie Glen Reply from 168.210.129.147: bytes=32 time=1099ms TTL=253

Reason for k@k speed

Hi,

Has anyone got any feedback/reason for the terrible 3G speed in Pta (Pta East specifically) from Vodacom ?

I travel to Jhb (Sandton/Midrand etc) frequently during the week and the difference in speed is unbelievable.

Here in old P-town it is just (sometimes) exceeding my Telkom dail-up with my 6 year old 56K modem. At least my modem connection has less disconnections...

I get the impression that Vodacom does not believe in customer feedback. I have mailed them on 5 occasions now without any reply whatsoever. Do Vodacom and Telkom call-centres use the same customer relations manuals ? :)

Riaan.

Hopefully not... :)

Riaan, there were upgrades done in the PTA area last Tuesday night and the feedback from BBSA and the other Blue Bulls (and our own tests) showed a big improvement on the radio / transmission network, i.e. not going out on the internet.

Have you tested after that and before yesterday when it seems, the wheels came of somewhere?

The International bandwidth was doubled Saturday morning and in any case must affect all users equally, so it can't be it causing the difference between PTA and JHB.

If possible, let me know when you testted, to where and what results you got.

In the meantime I'll find out what's going on and revert here.

Hi V3G

I think you missed my message from last night (I have also e-mailed you).

I only got 3.72Kbytes/sec ftping from smtp.vodacom.co.za

The system was basicly unworkable

Tried last night (Monday) to connect to the internet 3 times but had 'network failures' in W/Boom South - shelved the idea after that.

Cry out loud - why is disconnecting happening - it already feels like the standard, I also switched yesterday to my old fashion modem and with Mweb accelerator I get atleast better speeds and not disconnected, when will vodacom reinburse us for payments made for service that is not reliable.

V3G - is there any update on the WonderBoom South tower - I can only get 3g when outside and then only at a 1/5 signal strenght. I would like to consider getting a data card but not only for outside.

V3G I was receiving 3G for two days in Riviera, Pretoria, now it is back to GPRS with loads of frustration - I battle to stay connected in order to send this message - frustating - was the 3g tower only a trial run?
