Network quality - Rain's major problem

Rain subscribers continue to struggle with poor network speeds and a lack of support which can cost the operator dearly unless it fixes the problem soon.

Rain launched its first commercial fixed-LTE products in June 2017 and followed that up with numerous uncapped data products between 2018 and 2020.

The operator positioned itself as a consumer champion which offered affordable, uncapped mobile and fixed data products.

Rather complain than leave?? Uncapped, unshaped, unthrotled 10mbps fibre for the same price.......cheers!

True but FTTH is too limited just compare rain's current 5G coverage to FTTH coverage in all 4 metropolitan Municipalities covered by rain
5G has large footprint

Rain = huge amounts of data for a fraction of the cost, meaning poorer quality almost the same standard as LTE most any provider has already so you get what you pay for.

Premium wireless broadband (Wisps) = limited between 3-20MB depending on the provider you actually get what you pay for and again depending on the provider its always on but in some cases really friggin expensive

In conclusion, Rain is a buffet treat it as such and you'll not have a stroke, want true premium bandwidth either find a WISP that is semi-decent or really good that you can work with and move on. Having 300Mbps speeds is great and all but not really useable unless you're downloading files everyday

It is interesting how people want a lot, but arent prepared to spend more.

I had Rain LTE in 2019, then cancelled it after a few months due to the network speeds being a little average (~8mbps in Cape Town, almost unusable in East London). Switched to fibre and have been happy since.

Though rain's network has slipped over the years, they still offer the most affordable mobile uncapped solution. I hope they are able to add more capacity to their network; it'd be sad to hear rain has to take drastic actions like end the uncapped plans.

Rain is just pathetic. Sadly no other choice exists. Getting shaped and Throttled to hell and back even though I have no internet connection most of the time.

I think Rain's biggest problem is actually Cell C because they're both dating Vodacom whilst simultaneously competing for the title of worst network operator.

@Hanno Labuschagne

Maybe have a look at including a packet loss test in the MyBB Speedtest tool.

Packet loss is a very good tool for measuring the quality and saturation of a network, rather than just what the average speed is that users are getting/buying

Basically ever new ISP mybb has ever seen goes like this.

Empty new network >> OMG so amazing join this is so good value
Friends join >> OMG where did the amazing go

WA, AH, Axxess, Crystalweb etc all went through the same and somehow people are still surprised

Nope. Rain sucked from the get go.
It's iBurst without an umbrella.
I know many people that ditched them. They didn't wait around for things to improve. If you can't even download an email attachment, then choosing any other provider makes perfect sense.

I tested their network myself and it's beyond horrible.
Their network sucks. Everything about it.
Tested for a week and couldn't even download 20Mb. Full signal.

WA killed themselves. Wasn't anyone's fault. They lost direction. They are just a reseller today, when they used to be a force to reckon with. I'm a customer of theirs and know how backwards they went.

AH is Gian. Gian is AH.
The times I did deal with them was less frustrating than I expected it to be. So I can't fault them.

Never used Axxess or CW.

Point being. They all have positives and negatives. Rain is just one big negative in my view.
