I adore the new Polo GTI, but a comparison to the 1 isn't fair. It's a rung down.

Yo, come on guys! Give the gent a break. You dont know his situation so leave him be. He could have had a super rough December but for all we know, he may be debt free, have set investments etc.
I say, there is nothing wrong with grabbing yourself a new car when you're young and doing relatively well for yourself. If you work like a dog and want to reward yourself, then do it. People on this forum love to impose their ways on others. Of course though, you do get people who splurge 50% of their salary on a new car, which is completely irresponsible.
As long as you feel like you can afford it, get it.
As for the car itself, I'm not a fan. Didn't like the old 1 series and I dislike this one even more. If the A3 can improve the looks (which was already good looking) of the previous version, I dont see BMW doing very well with the 1 series.
As for the price, R287k for a 1.6T kicking out 100kw? Thats a little ridiculous...The torque at 220 isn't too bad though.
As for other options, why has no one mentioned the Alfa Romeo Giulietta
For R300k (10k on the clock) or so, you can get the Giulietta QV, 173kw and 340nm Torque! 
You could even pick up the 1.4T MultiAir for R250k (also 10k on clock), 125kw and 250nm Torque. Lets also not forget its an absolute looker (at least I think so)Its proven to be reliable. Since its release a year ago, there have been no significant "Alfa issues" reported. I keep a very close eye on the Alfa Owner forums. Mine is 10 months old and an absolute dream!

I can assure you the 1 series ride comfort is very good - nothing like a rock hard 3 series. Yet still 'sporty'.
Yes, the Polo GTi may be better value and more powerful than a similarly priced 118i, but at the end of the day, you are still in an overpriced Polo. The Polo is tiny inside - backseats are unusable to larger adults. Plus a full maintenance plan pushes the price up significantly. I would say the 1 series is touching Golf Gti in terms of interior and space, but maybe not power. That said, the Golf GTi costs more.
Alfa - will be worthless in 3 years time, despite being an attractive package. Resale is important.

If you hate the car, its simple. it's cause u cant afford it and it is way out of your league... stop comparing it to cheap cars... if your car is cheap.. it's just cheap and belongs to the cheap line. It's classy and oooh , worth every penny..

Im surprised that someone with your lack of spelling abilities can afford the car.
No matter what you say, 2 fact will remain about the 1 series.
1. They are way overpriced for what they are.
2. They look like they were designed by a blind person, who put some poop between two pages, then stomped on it for a bit. The resulting poop smear was the final design for the new 1 series.

Agreed. I'm still a big fan of the 1-series coupe, but the hatch - good heavens it's ugly and insanely overpriced.

Agreed! the previous 1-series hatches werent too bad looking, the 1-series coupe is damn sexy though.
The new 1-series hatch(poopsmear) is not pretty.
At least it's not as ugly as the Nissan Juke.
The Juke is in a separate class of hideousness alongside the Fiat Multipla.

The fiat Multipla must be the ugliest car in existence. The Juke is so ugly it almost becomes cool, but only as the Juke-R.

You're making a few good points, the 120d is a very good car with excellent performance.
What bothers me is the small price gap between the 120d and the new F30 320i which starts at 360k list price and has the same power as the 120d... Add a few extras and you're looking at 390 but you can negotiate it down to 370. So that's a just couple of grand more and you're getting a lot more car.
