My wife is getting a 118i Auto Urban Line. I can honestly say, neither of us liked the car from the press photos. For some reason, they chose a red one, which looked a bit droopy and just odd. We were invited to the launch in Joburg and went for the hell of it. It is MUCH better looking in person. The front end just 'works' when you can appreciate it in 3D in a decent colour, like black or blue. The interior is much improved over even the 3 series and comes close to Audi. The drive is unmatched - it is nimble, gokart like and the small, chunky steering wheel lets you whip the car around bends like no front wheel drive can ever match. The 125kw 1.6 Turbo is plenty potent and the gearbox is quick and smooth. The ride was compliant, comfortable, yet still a little sporty. But far superior to other BM's if driven which are rock hard and break your spine. Overall, I feel in love within seconds behind the wheel. Yes, it is a little pricey once you add some extras, but what car isn't overpriced in this country? A VW for R220k without motorplan? For 100k more you get am automatic beemer with toys and 5yrs maintenance thrown in, plus much more fun, status and enjoyment, not to mention performance and handling. Yes there are "better bargains" out there, but it depends on your needs. We already have a family sedan. I can suggest that if you are looking for a premium hatch with good performance, go have a look. If you can't afford a R350k car, then i think the discussion around price is pointless.
