New 2011 MacBook Pro

Slightly slower GPU, much better CPU, increased battery life and higher definition camera. Add in a Thunderbolt port and that pretty much sums up the differences.

If you are going to change the HDD yourself, you are going to need a T6 torx screw driver for the alignment posts on the drive.

You can pick one up at Makro for under R20

You will also need a tri-wing screwdriver to remove the battery.

You don't need to remove the battery to replace the HDD.

Nonetheless, any ideas on where to find a tri-wing screwdriver locally?

Not on the 13" but on the 15" you need to get the battery out which uses tri-wing screws.

Tri-Wing magnetic bits can be ordered from Christensen Tools, sizes 0-5 R7.90 exVAT each, sizes 6-9 R10.70 exVAT each. Just need a hexagonal driver handle for the bits to fit in which many people already have.

Wondering if there will be "aftermarket" EMPTY enclosures with thunderbird connectors. Have a few HDD's I would like to "populate". If that 10Gbps connector can fill external drives (or even a nice NAS then it will be worth it). Time will tell

Was planning on ordering a 2011 15inch macbook pro but after reading the apple forums it seems people are having problems with heat issues and freezes.
Not sure if this is a widespread problem, but just thought I would let people know.

Guess I will wait a while and see how this pans out

Hopefully my 17" will have less heat issues (more space in that unibody)... Time will tell...

Mn.. seems it might be a graphics / driver issue.. Oh well, have not even ordered my machine (10.6.7 will be out with a fix) or just wait for Lion.... But R/$ is good now, so might as well just go for it. They always say - best time to buy an Apple is after a refresh: the price will not drop (till next refresh) and you are not wondering if you have to wait for the next refresh....

I'm very disappointed that the new MacBook Pro doesnt come with at least some models SSD standard. Any idea how much Digicape will charge to add a 128GB SSD? And whats the lead/order time?

Thats why it's not a standard option, because it will cost minimum R2000 for a 128GB SSD.
I'm also pretty disappointed but have to upgrade. In two years when it slows down a bit and SSD is cheaper, i'll upgrade:)

They have the prices listed on the ZAStore website so I popped into the iStore at Vodaworld when I was there last week but they hadn't received any stock yet. The iStore in Sandton had already sold out of their first shipment and suggested I call back on Friday (tomorrow) or Monday... So that's what I'll be doing. I haven't tried any of the other stores in JHB 'tho.
