New 2011 MacBook Pro

Been thinking of getting the new 17" i7 but the reports of overheating and freezing are really off-putting.

Anyone have a new macbook and care to share your experiences?

Can't comment on the 17" i7, but my 13" had been rock solid since I bought it. Have been doing some handbrake encodes on it, so the CPU has been stressed.

yeah apparently the freezing doesn't affect the 13" models for some reason.

Getting one at the University next week :)

I was also a bit uprehensive, but ALL reports say apple fixed it with the update tp 10.6.7...

Will anycase get SSD or fastest 7200rpm drive I can afford when Lion ships in June / July and keep Snowleopard, Final Cut 7 on the "old" drive in an external enclosure (i.e. time machine backups).

Then wait for Thunderbolt external enclosures and go "crazy" on external "10" Gbps storage (should do 6 due to Sata 3 compatability on 2011 Mbp).

Hey this is my first post on MyBB . . . . .

has anybody used the new early 2011 MBP ? I'm possibly getting the 17" i7 , its a lot of money for a laptop and i don't want to regret buying 1 (With all the faults that it has freezing & overheating ect . . ) , i have a choice between a MBP or the alien ware MX17 , i would rather the mac because of the OS and it is less Susceptible to viruses as opposed to windows ,a mac is pretty solid in terms of build quality but there's no USB 3.0 or HDMI or Blu-Ray and i could always run windows on my mac don't think i would need to thou , i need to make an informed decision to which laptop to get , i will be doing a lot of image editing mostly with PSD's larger than 1.5GB-2GB and running Graphic intensive programmes battery life is also important for when I'm on location , i need a reliable piece of hardware that's going to last me the next 10 or more years . . . .

could you guys please advise me as to which laptop to get

Thanks guys

Don't think you're going to get any hardware that'll keep you sorted for 10 years. It might still work, but is going to be seriously outdated. Anyway, if you're doing graphics then I guess the Mac is the way to go.

Haha yeah i guess that would be a bit of an exaggeration thanks for the info tho

I got me a fancy 13' 2011 Macbook Pro. It's my first Mac and its been a very good experience thus far.

I too got a 13" i7 and it does get quite hot rather sudden. However, I found the source of the problem; Mail process shoots up to 100%+ and stays there indefinitely. This causes poor performance, low battery life, freezing and heat. This is quickly solved by closing mail.

I did a bit of digging into this and apparently its caused by large attachments sitting in the inbox and occurs typically when you change networks (home->work) and causing it to resync the mail.

Once I figured that out, my MBP has been a treat.

Another thing is to not block the rear vent. Its the thin slit at the lower back where the base and screen join. Its quite easily obstructed with blankets while sitting in bed ;)

BTW, watch out for Skype. It happened a couple of times where it maxes out my cpu for no apparent reason (no call in progress).

I have the base model 15". It doesn't seem to get that hot even when run full tilt for an hour. The one issue I have seen is that it occasionally gets stuck in sleep. Even turning it off completely, then back on did not resolve it. Works fine for a while, then suddenly one day it will simply refuse to wake up properly.

Anyway, if you're doing graphics then I guess the Mac is the way to go.
If you're going to be working in the industry it can be worthwhile to be familiar with the Mac because it is entrenched in that field, due to once, long ago, being the superior option for graphics.

i also experienced the sleep issue - 2011, sandy bridge MBP 15Inch, 256MB ded graphics version - weird that it happens but what a nice experience overall, and its my first mac hardware other than iphone!

hey

just wanted to know if anybody has bought a mac from overseas ?

erm. . .i want to get a macbook pro from over seas because its like R10 000 cheaper than buying one from S.A , how should i got about it ? , which shipping company should i use ? , what documentation would i require ?

ive never seen it being R10 000 cheaper
warranty is not carried here as far as i know if you buy overseas
you might get slapped an import duty as it comes through

Shouldn't be working in bed.... or watching "the tube" ;)
