New ADSL bandwidth trials?

Similar on my side

I posted a question yesterday about Telkom possibly throttling my line.

I have a 1024 line at work and download at terribly slow speeds (IMO) Two guys replied, so I don't want to repeat the whole thread again, but I am convinced that there is someting fishy going on. The file I downloaded from work (1024) came down at 7Kb/s. The same file from home last night (384) came down at 45Kb/s. In know that the difference is working hours and after hours but surely there shouldn't be such a difference.

I had issues with IS and have changed to a SAIX account hoping that my speeds would increase. They did for a while, but now I am not convinced that things are OK.

Cybersmart don't throttle according to sync speed - they bill according to sync speed.

I also tried an IS account and was limited to 40KB/sec so I don't think it's being throttled by the ISP - more likely on the DSLAM but not with sync speed.
Synced at 3072/640 now (was 3400/640 earlier).

I wish I could get my hands on the DSLAM equipment info or at least a Telkom network engineer who could tell me what's going on.
Oh well I'll just have to live with it and see what happens since no one on the support side of things knows what's going on.

I dont know how, or why, they would do it that way as the sync speed is completely unrelated to your line speed and is out of your control.
 
I think that cybersmart are only able to see what speeds you are syncing at...

Theoretically you should sync at the line speed you are paying for so if telkom are messing around this could give cybersmart a bit of a problem with their current billing scheme...

I'm sure cybersmart is using the throttling settings on the dslam rather than the sync rate. If not they'd better start.

Theoretically you should sync at a rate slightly higher than what you're paying for.
 
Yea but around a month ago i know a lot of people with 384 sync and 384 and those with 512 sync at 512...

I know that it should be a bit higher for the overheads... Maybe thats why people dont reach "full" speed...
 
To deviate slightly on the thread: The whole concept of various speeds at different prices seems wrong and illogical. If I am not mistaken, the Myadsl activists would argue the principle of "The faster and cheaper the internet of a country, the better the economy of that country."

Why would a government elected by the people to better the lives of the people, actively work against the interests of the country. By that I mean in order to decrease unemployment, decrease poverty and crime etc. it is necessary to improve the economy. The economy in today's world is directly related to presence and use of the internet. Therefore it is in the citizen's interest for the fastest speed possible to be made available to everyone at the same price.

Because the government (and who knows how many of their cronies) are telkom shareholders and benefit directly from the current environment.

What bwana said, and also, they don't really care. Realistically there's no chance of them losing the next election no matter what they do.
 
So cybersmart can actually detect at what speed your line is syncing? Then They charge acorrding to that? I always had the idea that they limmit your b/w, acording to what package you are subscribed to! So if I have a 1024 line and I buy the 384 package they will automatically charge me the 1024 price?

Interesting... I was also syncing at higher rates some time last week just checked again and i'm back to good old 384 syncs. I asked a buddy of mine who does adsl installations and he said that telkom check line sync max randomly to check the quality of line and to see what the line is capable of he said that they are not even aware of tripleplay being implemented or being tested yet. (But he is only a techie doing installs)
