Not really - that service is only cost effective if you're heavily into downloading I suspect most users wont need anywhere near 600 or even 1/10th of that. Of course r21 per GB doesnt sound as appealing as r2 does it. :)

If I can get what I need from a telkom account then why [-]spend[/-] waste more than I have to? The second you have ADSL installed you're feeding the beast so it's hardly selling out.

I don't have an issue with that. My issue is with people who are using Telkom willingly, but whining and bitching about it at the same time.

To them I say: If you are OK with Telkom, then use them by all means. But if you are not OK with them, then go somewhere else and quit griping.
 
Telkom corporate parasites are no doubt justifying the increase on the basis of their expensive German sedans and the cost of Moet is increasing. Telkom corporate CEO still spending R1000 for a glass of wine at exclusive restaurants. They should take a cut in salary if they want to cut costs!!

Fair to a point: I rely on ADSL connectivity and I don't like the fact that I can only get it from Telkom. So I reserve the right to bitch and whine about the lack of competition in this space, all while using the service regardless.

4sakes ! wish i had the luxury of R1300 a month to blow on ADSL ...which gets me thinking - if u have some mates i would suggest sharing that cost - guess would work best for a commune and not mates staying in different locations tho that would be the most cost effective solution to being able to download what u want.
 
Ok Gary, you opened the can :D - So if Openweb can supply you with 600GB/pm @ +/- R 2... then either they are making a loss with your account or they are making a healhty profit otherwise?

Are we sure the "poor" little ISP's are not milking us then? So we blame telkom - one source of the problem, DEFINATELTY, but are we not overlooking the fact that all other ISP are doing the same?

Let's be honest, If you can make 50% (thumbsuck) profit and co-exist with the other ISP's why the HELL upset the apple cart by charging less than the "going" rate... You will be shooting yourself in the foot and your business in the head if the other ISP's follow suit!

So ***** will happen, no matter how much we complain...any NGO ISP want to spring up :D

There are set precentages for profit throughout our whole retail system, which no retailer will dare overstep - other than the occasional "special"...so until some brave (read foolish) ISP steps up...the law of Transvaal will prevail: " K@k of betaal" :eek:

The connection cannot be shared, only one concurrent connection allowed. But I do download on request ;) And I am partly subsidised! :p

I dunno... but this Uncapped product is a "beta" product from OpenWeb... so they might still be working on the feasibility of it. I also do not use the line during the day... so there might be others out there who are maxing it out more than me.

This is IS bandwidth though... and it is an innovative product from OpenWeb similar to the OpenBrowse that utilises untapped bandwidth. The IS portion runs on the SAT3 cable (which does make me wonder whether Telkom is also using all of its SAT3 capability?)

I can't see how OpenWeb could provide such a product if it was not profitable for them... but I am hoping that when Seacom comes on board, the product will become even cheaper :D

Or maybe they will give me a bigger cap ;)

Yea, i'm aware of that - that's what i meant to say "sharing the cost"
get your mates to pay for you to DL movies etc etc ...what does it cost these days to hire a DVD? 20/25 bucks - they pay u the bucks and whala get to keep the movie instead of returning it the next day ...what a bargain !!

oh yes, ja... I don't ask for that... but some give it willingly. I share with anyone and everyone, as time allows.

i have that , and have been telkom free since end of april. totally wireless uncapped and on a 1:1 ratio

You're lucky you have a viable alternative at your disposal. My only other option is Vodacom and that is slow and prohibitively expensive.

Yeah, well according to Telkom they have slashed their wholesale prices, and SAT3 pricing is now similar to SEACOM. You might want to ask iBurst why they still charge upwards of R200 per gig for additional bandwidth, and why 1 gig of MWEB's ADSL bandwidth is a whopping R145?

Telkom is certainly not doing us any favours, but then show us one SA company offering a fair product at a fair price.

Rape, pillage and plunder seems to be the order of the day in the good old RS of A.

No, I'm with MWEB as reseller for iBurst. I don't pay Telscum for an ADSL line.
iBurst is expensive but if you factor in the 64k after cap and the 'no line rental fee' it's still cheaper than similar ADSL based solutions.

I agree iBurst must drop prices, if ADSL cost (including line rental) becomes less than iBurst, I'm dropping iBurst.
