Android, iPhone BBM delay details

Andrew Bocking, the head of BBM, said that an older version of BBM which was released online caused massive traffic volumes, forcing them to delay the launch to help them to block users of the older version.

sounds plausible. Pity that the leaked version caused such problems.

Why is this plausible?
If they had just released at the published time, they wouldn't have had so many downloads of the old app

Exactly! Launch was due 1pm our time. By 2pm forums were overflowing with links to the leaked copy. If the app worlds had had the app then there would be no need for the leak to have spread so rapidly....

Doesn't say much about how secure their system design is if one "poisonous" app can bring the whole thing to a grinding halt!

Surely they have system in place that can force you to automatically update to the latest version with a popup message disaplaying it isn't complex. He also did mention that we won't see an official BBM this week.

Maybe they purchasing more capacity/servers as there is a lot of demand for this app already

They simply under estimated the amount of interest in BBM

More BS. Capacity problems. Why did they halt the iOS rollout? Those who got it are still online the last I read. The android apps were killed. Bunch of turds can't even launch an app correctly.

They are lying. Why stop iOS version when the problem is caused by an Android version?

BB effed up again and BB can't even spin their excuses the right way.

What BS....really...1.1 million users generating too much traffic....what did they expect? an uptake of 60 people???
going live will be millions and millions....

I think they down scaled and now need to buy new server goodies.....me thinks :)

To roll out BBM to iOS and Android, platforms much larger than BB, would require a substantial investment in additional and more powerful equipment. Did they do that considering that they are up for sale? I doubt it. I cannot see them making the required investments at this delicate stage as potential buyers wouldn't want any large spending now. The timing for this massive launch into new territory was just very off. They should have waited till the sale has been concluded. The new owners will want to make this call, especially considering that chances are very good that the company will be broken up and that BBM will more than likely fly solo. The investments in new equipment can then only happen as it may well belong to another entity running with BBM.

I'm pretty sure the buyers won't mind investing in a running entity. Why pause everything for a sale when you can communicate with buyers and agree the way forward.

I think they had to run it by the new owner first. One of the developers for the Android version tweeted that the Android apk is ready and sent for submission but the issues reside at enterprise(server) level and the app won't release until the servers are properly updated. There's also measures being put in place to prevent any other leaked BBM's from surfacing and becoming active.

Rather they sort themselves out now than releasing a half baked app like Mxit has done.

This is actually just an excuse.

They didn't meet their own deadline, even their horrible vague one, and needed a scapegoat to the delay the launch longer.

Worse they still don't have an official release date.

As hard as this is for some people, I think its time to move on and stop giving them attention.

It would seem like whatsapp is the best IM out there :P

Letter of interest has been drawn. So basically they already been bought. So now I am sure they can buy new hardware, but will have to run it by new owners 1st.
