would be nice for the kitchen, or to carry around the house instead of your monster 17" laptop, through using the RDM app and Wifi (n).
Also for education and multitasking in general. I hated my school bag, weighed a tone, came home, and just fell on the bed, got these horrible skin tears around my fingers all the time taking files out of the bag. with this device, simply say 'geography work' and there it is. Teacher-student collaboration could also be taken to a whole new level, all while increasing productivity and lowering costs. (avr. south african student costs 12k per year for the government spending on schools alone).
I only wish that it had a cam and a solar panal behind the LCD, to charge that low powered chip with.

I am not convinced that there is a big market for a device between a netbook (or ultra-portable laptop for that matter) and a mobile media device like an iPod touch. I find it difficult to see what the value of the iPad is over a high-end netbook.
I'll think i'll go for the HTC HD2 for now. But an iPad for a birthday present for the elderly technophobes would be very first on my list. It looks very easy to use, and it's neat, and once they find out how intriguing it is, they'll bite.

Its gonna need a year before we will truly know if its a useful device or not. It's all going to depend one what developers do with the apps. If they create a bevy of interesting and innovative apps then we will all want an ipad, but if it just the usual, well then we will all probably just pass on it.
The key difference between this and a netbook is that touch and the accelerometer are the only real input methods. Up until now developers haven't really had the opportunity to see where those input methods will take them. Hopefully it will all lead to a set of apps which are more intuitive and natural.

The problem with people commenting on this site is you are all too sensible. My girlfriend is not going to give me peace until she get one. No matter how many impractical features I point out it does not matter. What does matter is: 1) Is it pretty 2) Is the software pretty 3) Is it cool to be seen with one 4) Does some celebrity have one. Then you are done. I am off to buy some Apple shares.
Your girlfriend is a shallow, miserable person. Surely you can find better.

Apple iPad
It might just be that sometimes we miss the point, especially if you interact and understand technology on a regular basis. There are a vast number of people that do not enjoy and never wish to understand all the intricacies of technology like operating systems, anti-virus, boot up, downloads, upgrades, root files, etc. (And as we all know that is not even the tip of the iceberg.) However e-mail, e-books, digital photography, the web, youtube etc. are important and even they realize that and wish to share in all the excitement. I do believe the iPad is the solution for them. They do not want a computer (or even netbook) and the iTouch is to small. I have regularly heard the sentiment stated that why do you need a computer when you only wish to use e-mail. The iPad can be switch on and you can read and reply to e-mails, surf the web, watch your photos (and those of the grand children), plan your calendar, watch youtube and without getting to "wild" maybe even do the budget in iWorks, all without having to understand technology or being tech savvy. I do not think the iPad was conceived with us geeks in mind who would always (at least for the foreseeable future) chase capacity, resolutions, speed etc. (That is noty to say that I do not want an iPad!). However the iPad may well become indispensable to people like my parents who wish to share the magical world that is developing around us. I again tip my hat and say: Thank you Mr Jobs for a job well done!

I agree that there are a few shortcomings to the iPad but I can see the benefits of the device.
It is elegant comfortable and has many of the functions that I require.
Some of the shortcomings will be fixed in the coming months or years with newer models and updates.
The only thing that I can see giving Apple a run for their money is Android combined with Nvidia Tegra platform. From some research it looks like the iPad is already using the Tegra platform in some way or another.
Apple will sell millions of iPad devices - PERIOD!

There cant be one for the iphone yet otherwise the missus would have absconded with mine.
Does not follow. The only reason WHY the iPad can be successful is the tight ECOSYSTEM it exists in. You have the app store, you have itunes store (music and video) and you will have some news papers and books on board. There is really no other reason to consider this a successful device because technically it is not superior than other devices out there with the exception of the long battery life. It is a convergence device - meaning it brings a number of things together - but its no better than the individual products in its segment.
Other devices, even superior ones, won't dent it, without their own ecosystems, and Apple has created a very large ecosystem with no real competitors UNLESS you look at an open platform but for people who want simple and canned entertainment - iPad is it.
