Ok so the new axxess uncapped or should I say IS uncapped account has been launched. Some interesting idea's there. They are shaping clients instead of protocols, so if you download 24/7 your line will crawl, but it you use data sporadicly it should be unshaped most of the time... plus it has a 2 concurrent connection allowance. All in all if they have allocated enough bandwidth to ensure a reasonable service this could be the first rel competition to MWEB.

I think the only weakness here will be communication, they need to make sure they inform you when you fall into the shaped pool and when you revert back into the unshaped one.

What do you guys think of the new changes?

It is a new policy:

* User Policy applies 24/7, Weekends & Public Holidays
* For the 4096kbps Account, if you're in Top 50% of IS users for this connection speed, you will be shaped

3. Full 24/7 Tech Support

12. 2 Concurrent Connections - The account speed is shared between 2 connections (4MB/s = 2 x 2MB/s)

It is interesting, but how would I know which category I fall under unless I try it?

Yup I have a feeling the guys who download 24/7 are gonna hate this account, but if you use quite a bit of data in "chunks" this may be a pretty good service. An example would be a gamer who downloads from steam and does the occasional "linux distro" download for personal entertainment.

Agreed. Since it's unshaped, games should be better. I wonder what it's like when shaping does kick in? It sounds a bit like rolling thresholds under a different name. In fact all these uncapped accounts are just variations on a theme.

From the Axxess news letter:

The 20% User Policy will be applied to Uncapped Express+ accounts after hours (8pm-8am), public holidays and weekends only. The normal daytime user policy still applies.

I think you will find it is still throttled during the day which was my reason for cancelling.

does this apply to all ISP providers reselling the IS uncapped service?

This thread is about Axxess Uncapped, rather than Axxess Express. So the accounts are not throttled to 192k during the day, but the general shaping is much more severe.

With the current changes, though, the express accounts have now lost the only reason they were still being purchased.

Sounds like a good idea, what happens if you get shaped though? How bad is it?

How many gb's would get you shaped i wonder? How much a month?

What a joke of a product, so a user gets the throttled in the day and unshaped at night as long as they aren't high users? The shaping is enforced when it's least needed? Pathertic.

I'm still on the (old) uncapped express - which has deteriorated a lot since they announced the new package details. It's bizarre that they're still charging the same for this product while simultaneously downgrading it's usability.
Canceling and looking for alternatives next month.. i guess it's time to try out mweb?

Launch Postponement of NEW Uncapped Offerings

At Axxess, we do our level best to offer world-class products. Due to the fact that we were not happy with the quality of the product at the time of this notification mail, we have decided to postpone the launch – more on this soon!
Oh well. At least they saw a problem.

20% Usage Policy Explained

Internet Solutions have implemented a “Top 20%” usage policy on 384Kbps and 512Kbps uncapped accounts globally (see uncapped accounts). This means that should the amount of data which you are using, put you into the top 20% of IS’s global uncapped users for that account, you will be shaped for a 10 day rolling window period.

The 4MB Uncapped Basic Account will have a “Top 50%” usage policy and will also have the 10 day rolling window period.

Both the Uncapped Express+ and Uncapped Basic accounts are unshaped until the usage policy is enforced – so for those who don’t abuse their accounts, you will have unshaped bandwidth all the time!

The 20% User Policy will be applied to Uncapped Express+ accounts after hours (8pm-8am), public holidays and weekends only. The normal daytime user policy still applies.

As long as IS realise that they need at lead five morons stupid enough to buy this product in order to have a top 20%.

How would we know how many subscribers they have and what percent are 'abusing' the service?
