Hi Guys...

I never venture into this forum since me and camera's aren't that great friends.

But now my brother wants a camera, you guys got any idea's as to what camera is the best for a beginner... he takes quite nice pics with a cellphone camera but got some money so decided he wants a nice camera...

His budget is R6000 maybe a little more

Thanx
Peder

Perhaps Nikon D40 on special for R4999 or less at most places, the R1000 leftover can be spent on a bag/tripod/memory card/accessories.

Or perhaps the Canon 1000D... Decent starter camera and it has live view (you can view your to-be photos on the LCD as opposed to most DSLRs with which you have to use the viewfinder).

Also check for second-hand deals on Gumtree and OutdoorPhoto Classifieds. Some killer deals that include more than just the [limiting] kit lens.

for R5000 you can't do better than D40
sometimes I kick myself for buying the D90 when I see the d40 pics - hehe

Someone is channeling ken Rockwell again ..... :p

how about having a look at the Canon SX10, it has 20x zoom with image stabilizer and loads to mention.
I don't think this camera would be as bulky as the SLR's so thats a plus if your brother is looking for something easier and lighter to carry around

hey Bwana, how about that Nikon you were looking at the last time? the point and shoot one. I cant remember the model. does that fall in his price range?

Does he want a decent point and shoot or a dSLR?

The P6000? Locally its a little out of his price range - overseas though its over r2k less! Guess where I'm buying mine :D

I'm pretty sure I saw the older 400D being sold for under r6k the other day. Not the latest and greatest but it's served me fairly well.

I'm not familiar with Nikon or Sony but both are good. Take a look at the Canon 1000D. It's an entry-level DSLR but worth every cent...

I was playing with a friends one the other day and would still take the (cheaper) 400D - they cut down on AF points and I guess the buffer size as it will apparently only let you do a four shot burst if you're shooting RAW.

It does however come with the IS kit lens if that makes a difference.

Is the 400D cheaper? Oh... didn't know. Well trust Bwana here, he knows a lot more than I do :p

So i should get the Canon 400D?

i actually just want something that will last. even if he doesn't use all the features now something thats not going to become "old" soon... you know what i mean?

I can tell you mostly about video camera's but still camera's are a puzzle to me... LOL!!!

There are so many good consumer grade dSLRs these days its hard to choose - my advice is for your brother to go to a camera shop and actually hold a few of the bodies. Then to go home and compare the features of the ones he preferred the most.

Nah - sometimes he just likes to think he does - thanks for humouring him :p ;)

ah ok... i will do that thanx bwana... so there isn't one specific one that stands out above the rest?

Peder : Each have there pros and cons...

I'm a Sony person, bwana is a Canon fanboi :p, some others here are Nikon.... its all about personal preference ultimately...

If it becomes a proper hobby, it will bankrupt you fairly quickly, no matter which manufacturer you choose.
