New Camouflaged Speed Cameras

There have apparently been some new speed cameras installed in Stellenbosch and Knysna that look like electricitry boxes:



Don't know if anyone has any info on them. They seem rather peculiar, and they're rather low down on the ground, but people are claiming they're cameras.

I think they may actually be a reality. I saw a Traffic cop attending to one of these boxes on the N12 near carltonville.

They used a very similar speed camera in the Kruger (it has since been removed, I see).

well, people shouldn't break the law. i support the gov't on it's commando tactics and hope it does more. Motorist in this countries are the devil's right hand.

There is exceeding the speed limit and then there is exceeding the speed limit. They have a lot of unnecessary 60km/h zones where you feel that going 75-80 should be the slowest you should go. I understand catching people doing 160+ in a 120 zone or 120 in an 80 zone but when you get fined for doing 80 in a 60 zone sometimes it's just unnecessary.

1300 People died on the roads this holiday season and your seriously going to make traffic enforcement about government wanting money? If you want to bitch and moan about the government do it on actual issues, there are more than enough of them going around. Well done to the government, this should be a more cost effective way of enforcing the laws and some one clearly though outside the 'box'.....

Also isnt that DA territory? So not even the ANC.

Just cos you cant drive for sh**, doesn't mean the rest of us must suffer by paying all our tax to this crap! There's far bigger issues in this country...

That thing can't be a camera for SPEED ; as it will only be effective in the lane closest to it; as that lane's traffic will obstruct the other lanes; and the first lane its 'catching' in is a left turn lane; so it will not catch anybody slowing down to turn left as most people don't turn left at 160km/h

Most of the accidents over the holiday period were caused by drunk drivers and not speeding.

In fact in many cases they INCREASE the accident stats because people know where the cameras are and speed off after passing them.


The government should focus of vehicle and driver roadworthiness instead.

True... in that case it might be for monitoring license plates.

Exactly.
If I exceed the limit by a few km/hour I will get nailed because I have number plates on my car.
Plenty of cars have one or both plates removed and if they go through the trap at two or three times the limit nobody gives a shlt .
Until the number plate laws are enforced I will not believe that the government is serious about road safety.

Yip. Camera's are the laziest way of 'enforcing' traffic laws. Fixed camera or mobile 'in the bush' cameras.

More visible policing will make people drive better. We need to see more people pulled off the roads for driving badly- which is more dangerous than speeding!

True, but how many people will receive a fine in the mail and then just go and pay it.... whether the actual fine was 'issued' legally and or whether the correct procedure was followed etc... is beside the point. Most people I know run and go pay their fines, even if receiving them almost a year later in the mail.....
