I would actually reckon its safer doing 160kph in a 120 zone than doing 80kph in a 60 zone. These areas where they have speed limits of 60kph are generally residential areas or places with high foot traffic. The stopping distance required for these areas is much shorter than on a freeway where you shouldn't find too many pedestrians. Also the difference in survival for a pedestrian being hit at 60kph and 80kph is huge. I'm not saying they don't sometimes put 60 zones in silly places, but most of the time they are there for a reason.
 
I like what UK did:

Put speed cameras all over the place with big warning signs and notched painted lines. People knew it was there and everyone kept to the speed limit. Basically it worked like a speed bump. They also usually placed them in places where it mattered, like near schools, busy pedestrian streets or dangerous intersections.

The cameras weren't there to make money, they were there to stop people from speeding.

Just obey the speed limits. The bold portion of your comment above shows that you are prone to speeding.
 
It seems there are a lot of people that are just too impatient to drive at the speed limit. They have to go at least 80km/h otherwise they get extremely angry and agitated.

My observation as well.
I try to stick to the speed limits but often drive about 10km/h over the limit to try to pacify the motorists behind me.
The problem is that most people seem want to drive 120 in an 80 zone on rural roads and I refuse to drive faster than 90 in an 80 zone.
Then when they can't get past they get aggressive and do stupid things line over take with oncoming traffic or over blind rises.
I wish I didn't have to drive with all these idiots on the roads - it stresses me out.

Any speeding enforcement that is not widely known and immediately visible to motorists has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with revenue generation. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded.
 
So nobody here doesn't believe it's a camera, it's not even pointing at the road. Looks like one of those traffic light control boxes to me, however no traffic lights nearby. Probably just some kind of cable junction box.

Then petition the city council to change the speed limits if you feel there is a justifiable reason for it to be different on that section of the road. Request they do a technical evaluation which will be based on road surface, cross traffic, pedestrian traffic etc.

Am I a bad human for not bothering to pacify them and then being entertained by the looks of frustration in their eyes?

The double negative means everybody believes it is a camera?

It's quite clear from the IOL article, that these are cameras, designed to generate revenue for the City councils that deploy them.

I must say in Cape Town with the "Ghost Squad" or whatever they are called this is happening more and more often.

What would be great is if the cops could also put in some effort to actually keep pedestrians off our highways instead of lounging around in their cars a mere 50m away and pleading ignorant.

Not too sure what i think of this Ghost Squad idea. I dont like that they are just normal cars, and not even with "CCT" number plates anymore.. I've seen plenty of them with normal "CA" plates on, and it just puts a bad taste in my mouth tbh! I'm not completely against the idea though.

One thing they ARE doing a great job of, is keeping these line jumping / Lane hoping taxis in check! I often see taxis getting pulled over by these guys when driving home from work.

I completely agree with you about the pedestrians that just wonder the sides of the roads though! The N2 is terrible for that!
 
The best way to control speed in an area would be to have big visible passive cameras. Nobody is going to speed if they can see the cameras. People will still speed if there is a cop hiding in the bush or if the camera is hidden in a box. They should just put up highly visible cameras every 2km or so.

Visible policing is a good idea but then we would need way more cops than we have now which means more more money will be needed to pay their salaries.

Exactly, I'm not buying that it's a camera. IOL is hardly reputable.
 
That dark grey window on the box is probably a piece of glass/acrylic behind which the dayandnight sensor for the streetlights are 'hidden' otherwise the sensor would be broken off and on its way to a secondhand copper dealer aka scrapyard; that box is just a junction box and the speedkop that they spoke to took the interviewer doing the interview (and the public ) for fools ; and probably thought if they are so stupid to think its a camera ; let them think its one and let them drive slower at these boxes (laughing behind his hand )


Remembering now; I have passed the one at kayamandi and never had the impression its a camera ; but always thought its a junction box; (it can't be a camera as I have no fines from that road)
 
Quite frankly it's easier to spot one of those boxes than the light grey cameras they use at the moment.
