New Canon cameras

Not a peep about the S90? I dont know what it is about it but I'm almost tempted to arrange for my P6000 to have an accident . . .

Reitz explained that the G11 would make an ideal backup camera for serious and professional photographers.
Dont be silly. I'm sure, like it's predecessors, it's a great P&S but the only backup for a dSLR is another dSLR.

The 100mm 2.8 macro lens is the first macro lens to incorporate image stabilisation
Its worth also mentioning that the new IS (image stabilisation) system on this pro level lens is termed as HYBRID IS, the progressive feature being that it can now detect angular movement, as well as the standard vertical and horizontal.

A lot of pros have G9's and 10's, compacts have their uses. But yes, not really as back ups, per say.
Sure they have their uses - mine even geotags - and a P&S is always going to be better than nothing but if I think I'm going to take photographs rather than snapshots I'll grab a 400Ds and leave the P6000 in the glove compartment.

And its Per se. :)

:( @ no love for the S90. It was the only announcement from Canon that interested me.

Maybe one day Canon will make a cheap slow EF-S 10mm prime lens for people who can't afford the EF-S 10-22mm...

The Sigma 10-20 is supposed to be pretty good. Personally my 16-35 is wide enough for my needs - maybe too wide.

As far as compact Canon cameras go, the G series are often the first choice for pros/enthusiasts, that's all I'm saying. And they are capable of capturing great quality images.

BTW, I believe Canon have reduced the megapixel size of the G11 sensor. Anyone know the reasoning for this? (would research myself, but on local bandwidth only at the mo' :( )

To answer my own question (got international bandwidth back :) )
The reduction from the 14.7 megapixels to an unassuming 10.0 megapixels represents more than just a move away from high megapixels but rather a focus on vastly improved noise performance as well as better results across the dynamic range

As I thought, basic rule being that the larger the pixel on the sensor the more light information that can be captured.

I have the Sigma 10-20 and love it, although I often tend to find my feet somewhere in the photo. It it probably my most used lens and almost always lives on the 50d.

I will be getting the S90 when it becomes available for something light when hiking.

My 50mm f/1.8 lives on the camera as everything else I own is too slow . . . apart from the 16-35 f/2.8 that is but that's too darn bulky. Maybe it's time for a "what is your primary lens" thread?
