Hi Guys

Looking for some advice if possible.

I'm currently driving a 2012 Ford Fiesta 1.6 3Dr titanium. (Paid for, I owe nothing on it)

Now my work commute is about 100Km per day so I need a car that is cheaper to maintain and given the rising price of fuel, even more fuel efficient.

The car is only used for my work commute, we have another car that my fiance drives on her short commute and we use that on the weekends as well.

The tyres on the Fiesta is quite expensive as they are a special size 16"

Since I will be averaging 30 000 km per year I will be trading my car each 3 years.

Now the car I have been thinking about is the VW Move Up!

Seems like quite a good little car for one person and being VW it should keep its resale value?

Only thing I wish it had was an auto gearbox but in the R150k price range there isn't many auto's anyway.

Any other options? I would like to find something of about R150K as I dont want to finance anything.

Edit: I forgot to say I would like a car that still has warranty etc, so probably 1 or 2 years old.

Thanks.

Polo Vivo 1.4 is always a good buy. The Up! is also a good choice. Diesels are a bit more expensive to buy but give much better gas mileage. Might be worth the bit more expensive price seeing where the petrol prices are going.

for a 100km commute everyday the up will kill you.

a bit too small and low on power for that workload everyday, and youll end up working it so hard on the uphills and overtakes that youll end up with 1.6 fuel consumption anyways

No one want to comment on the fact that he doesn't have an installment now and will have one when buying a new car?

There is not car that you can buy, that will safe you enough on maintenance and fuel costs, and make it worth having a car installment again. IMO, try saving money elsewhere, as you already have the "perfect" situation with your car. It's not that expensive to maintain.

As stated in my original thread:

There will be no finance, If I sell my Fiesta the amount to pay in will be minimal.

Any comments on the Suzuki Swift 1.2GL ? Going for about R150k basically brand new?

I know the new one is around the corner but it will be much more expensive.

Man, honestly, rather keep your paid up car, in fact worship it. It might be boring and all, you'll sleep well at night knowing you can live on less, save more money and fix it if something goes wrong, your insurance will be much cheaper since the car is a bit older...

Just take good care of it. Most dealerships won't give you much as a trade in on the car, you could sell it privately but that's always a hassle.

Ease off the throttle, my fiesta st full tank takes me a good ±690km if I don't get tempted to floor the dan thing, your's should probably do a little bettre. Keep your log book safe (All your receipts and service things)

Okay let get this straight, you've got a car you've fully paid for and you now want to get another car that requires you to pay an installment to save on petrol? So you'll get a smaller car and save R500p/m on petrol for a R3000p/m installment? Not taking into consideration insurance costs go up for more expensive cars.
Also smaller motors are great for town driving, but really suck on the open road for fuel economy.

If only people could do a little more thinking, good thing OP is asking for advice though. I surely hope he doesn't trip himself.

His not financing according to his previous reply.

I've made that mistake a couple of times when it comes to trying to save electricity, but in the end I do end up with a newer more efficient device it will just take 3 years to justify the expense.

That's if he can get around R150k for a 6 year old Fiesta? I still say stick with the car you've got at R150k the options are limited in the new market and if he goes second hand he'll be picking up someone elses problem. Smaller cars for that amount of driving a day won't give a massive saving either.

^ This, why go through all the hassle of selling and buying and not knowing what you're getting for your money , the Fiesta is a comfortable car for that commute, is pretty fuel efficient if driven properly, do some calculations and see if its viable to change to a 15" rim/tyre set on your next tyre change interval.

My fiesta has been paid off for 6 years now and i've never looked back.
