new chromecast

Okay next challenge.... how to get BBC iPlayer and Hulu and maybe even Netflix to work on this.

I read somewhere google's own DNS servers is hard-coded into the chromecast. You may have to edit your router config to manually block google's DNS server. Only then will the chromecast resort to using yours/unotelly's.

I see you've bought the CC already, but the Roku 4 has been released as well.

yeah... and? Personally I'll go for the new Apple TV when it comes out. But the CC is so cheap that you can actually have that plus another device.

No and, I just thought I'd mention it here in case you've missed it.

One big thing the Roku 4 has over the new Apple TV is 4k capability. Apple will probably release the Apple TV S 6 months down the line with 4k support :D

I'd be surprised if they offered 4k support earlier than a couple of years down the line. It's one thing to support video playback, and another thing to output 4k natively in the UI and apps and games. You don't want a situation where all the games have to downscale to 1080 on your 4k TV.

Just for media playback is fine, the interface on the Roku 4 is only 1080p anyway which is perfectly fine. If you've got a 4k TV and only a 1080p capable device everything going to be upscaled anyway.

Yeah it'll suck to have a 4k TV and upscaled video from your Apple TV. No 4k on the new CC either. It's Fire TV or Roku4 right now.

Forgot about that you have to reroute it. I'm not sure if blocking works but it's quick and a once off thing.

I was also eyeing the new version, but ended up buying the Amazon Fire TV stick for our guest bedroom, because it comes with a remote and all our guests do not have smart phones (I already have the Chromecast v1). I bought it via a friend in the USA, so I paid about R520. Hope I'm not disappointed...

Please let us know what the fireTV stick is like. Was also thinking about getting one for the older folk when they come around, they think what we do with the chromecast is some sort of evil sorcery and refuse to switch on the telly when we're not home. They sit en stare aimlessly at the black screen for hours while drinking tea. Otherwise I'm looking at perhaps a Nexus player since you can also cast to it.

Can these remotes on the fireTV, nexus player, shield etc switch the TV on and off... I think that's their main problem. Since the chromecast automagically switch on the TV when you cast to it, they assume the TV can only be switched on with magic and spells since they don't see us using some sort of button.

I'm eyeing out the Roku Streaming Stick for the bedroom but saw a comparison between this and the Amazon Fire Stick and they say the Fire Stick loads quicker etc but hasn't got the amount of channels that the Roku has. Also the interface and features on the Roku apparently is better.

I mainly use Netflix, but perhaps if I got the Roku i'd use some of the other channels.

As for the Chromecast, I'm not a fan of having to "cast" something to my screen. I haven't got a dedicated PC or anything with media on it.

One can just as easily stream to the Chromecast. It supports most of the same channels that the Fire TV does. The real question is whether you prefer to use a dedicated remote or a phone/tablet/PC as the remote. There's pros and cons both ways. I like the ability to see the data on your phone and I like being able to cast downstairs to where my kids are. On the other hand, I think a remote is quite a bit faster.

Will do. I expect to get it around November when my friend comes to visit from the US.

The remote was what won me over in this case. I plan to use the Fire TV stick in the guest room and, depending on the age of the guest, they may not have a Chromecast compatible phone.
