We used to have an AMD sempron 2.7 GHZ pc which was struck by lightning, so we replaced it with a 2.66 Ghz Intel celeron.
I wrote a program to convert large text files to mp3 interfacing with espeak. So for example you can take a novel with 10 chapters and it will create a text-to-speech mp3 file for each chapter.
My previous pc needed about 10-15 seconds per chapter. The new pc needs between 30-70 seconds for each
I have DDR2 usb ports, but it takes about 2 minutes to copy 100mb to a flash drive.

Is there some program I can use to run a test on my pc to see if everything is working properly/running at the proper speeds?

Is it a single core Celeron? Because from what I can gather that will be significantly slower than the Sempron.

the celeron and sempron were both single core processors.
Isnt a sempron AMD's "celeron" ie budget processor. Would it be that much more efficient?

You're welcome to list models and we can check benchmark performance.

Sempron sounds pretty old to me, so unless you replaced it with an as old/older Celeron, I don't udnerstand how a modern Celeron (assuming newer PC) would be that much slower...

unfortunately the computer shop didn't give me any manuals or boxes, so the only thing I know is that the pc is a 2.66 Ghz Intel celeron. the AMD was a 140 sempron 2.7GHz

thanks for the link- Bought it new about a month ago.

A month ago means they would have had the latest Intel 2011 LGA1055 Sandybridge Celeron's to build with, which have much better caches:

Intel Sandybridge lga1155 Celeron G440 - Single core / 1 thread , 1.6ghz box cpu , VT-x , no TXT , no VT-d , no AES-N , built-in dual channel DDR3-1066 memory controler , built-in HD2000 graphics ( 6EU , 650/1000mhz , dual stream video decode + HDMi ) , 1mb L3 cache , 35w - FDi + Clear Video HD+ Dual Display Capable

Intel Sandybridge lga1155 Celeron G460 - single core+Hyper-Threading / 2 threads , 1.8ghz box cpu , VT-x , no TXT , no VT-d , no AES-N , built-in dual channel DDR3-1066 memory controler , built-in HD2000 graphics ( 6EU , 650/1000mhz , dual stream video decode + HDMi ) , 1.5mb L3 cache , 35w - FDi + Clear Video HD+ Dual Display Capable

Intel Sandybridge lga1155 Celeron G530 - Dual core / 2 threads , 2.4ghz box cpu , VT-x , no TXT , no VT-d , no AES-N , built-in dual channel DDR3-1066 memory controler , built-in HD2000 graphics ( 6EU , 850/1000mhz , dual stream video decode + HDMi ) , 2mb L3 cache , 65w - FDi + Dual Display Capable

Intel Sandybridge lga1155 Celeron G540 - Dual core / 2 threads , 2.5ghz box cpu , VT-x , no TXT , no VT-d , no AES-N , built-in dual channel DDR3-1066 memory controler , built-in HD2000 graphics ( 6EU , 850/1000mhz , dual stream video decode + HDMi ) , 2mb L3 cache , 65w - FDi + Dual Display Capable

So unless you stipulated strict budget, I'm unsure why they would've used +-2yr old Celeron D? Another giveaway is DDR2 RAM - that was pretty much phased out from new PCs at least year ago and DDR3 is now the norm. The reason why they would have supplied a DDR2 motherboard is because it is probably the only one that supports LGA775 Celeron D... Hell, they might've even sourced it second-hand considering DDR2 LGA775 mobo's are so scarce.

:erm:

Something fishy.

very interesting that you say this- take a look at this link if you dont mind:

2.66GHZ Celeron - AFAIK last one was the LGA775 Celeron (LGA775 is 2 - 5 years old now).
DDR2 mobo.

Both of these point at second hand parts/mobo for sure. It's strange though since DDR3 stuff is actually really cheap.

Few scenarios:

1) Shop had the parts lying around
2) Shop sourced parts second hand from someone else/internet
3) Shop assistant had/sourced parts and profited themselves
4) Shop couldn't get single core CPU so genuinely tried helping (but didn't tell you it would have to be second-hand)

What's funny is if you give us the mobo model number we could probably track down the sale if conducted online. :D

Tell us what you paid for the PC. Scan/photo invoice and/or list all the parts/prices, please.

What did they sell you son? Celerons and Semprons? I had to check that this wasn't thread necro from 2005.

the invoice is very basic- but for the processor, motherboard and case cost R1600

Download this program: http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z/1.60-setup-en.exe
Install it and run it. Tell us the model number of the CPU and also go to the motherboard tab and tell us what's the motherboard model. Should explain a lot :)

awesome- here are the results:
