New crappy ADSL offering

From the Hellkom Site (no really, Hellkom not Telkom http://hellkom.co.za).

Line rental: R449/mo
Download limit (cap): 3 Gigabytes
Local and international speed after cap: 56k for both
Port prioritization and bandwidth shaping: Yes
Download/Upload speed: 384/128kbps
Monthly basis or 2-year bundle: Both
ISP Account cost: Normal account prices apply
Modems available: Ethernet or USB with POTS filter included
Downgrade fee from 512k: R250
Installation: R404
Cancellation: R70.89/month for the number of contract months remaining

I am inclined to believe that this is the definitive answer. The good is that there is no disconnect after reaching the cap, the bad is that both local and international are throttled.

The way I see it, the R250 odd I save by going a little slower is just what I need for an extra 3gb, giving me a 6gb cap. Well worth it I would say.

Anyhow, we will really know for sure probably next week or so when lots of ne HomeDSL users start hitting the cap. Unless of course Telkom haven't yet implemented it properly yet.

i am still not convinced about the capping of local and international ... my argument is as follows ...

1)the line is not involved in the capping only your ISP account is ...
2)capping is done on the ISP account so a normal "prolog" account will not be local capped on a 384kbs line ...

i may be wrong but it makes no sense if you sign up a AC at mweb they should not need to know what line you on and there for you get same as 3G/512 but at 384 only slower ... not any change on cap as the speed is applied at the dslam port there is not need for the isp to know what line you have ...

I seriously doubt the local throttle. I was told more than once, by different people, that it's the identical service as before, only at 384/128.

All we can do is wait, or hope Telkom makes this explicit on their web site.
Hellkom use sensationalist reporting more often than not. Their indication of the package is purely a guess until Telkom clarifies it, and by no means should be seen as the 'definative' answer. Just because one uninformed Telkom orc does not know the answer, does not mean it is definately so.

Are you referring to the Hellkom site or Telkom being sensationalist? If you're referring to Hellkom you can go **** yourself, I'm not a reporter and have never said that I am and how can I be - I'd ont't 'report' on anything.. and the site isn't sensationalist - it's my opinion. If you don't like it, **** off, don't go to the site, and that goes for anyone else who knocks it.

As for the mail, it was sent to Technical Support and I waited two days for it. Short of callin Sizwe Nxasana that's the best answer you'll get until Telkom wakes up and issues decent press releases.

This is just the usual Telkom farce. How can you launch a product and not know what that product actually is? The fact that a company this utterly useless can not only make a profit, but an obscene profit just shows how absolutely insane our telco policy has been in this country. Hopefully things will change next year. Not Telkom of course. I fear that their corporate culture is so far ingrained that any change in it can only be measured in decades. But hopefully we will have some choice for a change.

probably signing on as many people up before they drop the bomb and tell you it is a complete cap!!!! Would not surprise me. Why is it that no one actually know what is happening.
[my opinion] Something is def not correct with this package. I think MaD is right, else why all the secrecy. I would def wait until it is made CLEAR before buying into this[/my opinion]

There is no peace without war!!!

I would regard it as definitive as in "the best answer we are able to get at the moment". I don't think it fair to disparage Hellkom for giving us this best available answer when Telkom itself is unable to do so.

Not a disgruntled Telkom Share Holder are we?

LOL - Methinx GAMOS misses the declarative intent and purpose of the site in the first place, and either does not understand or chooses to ignore the context within which it was originally created...

hi there

well to add to the pot, How about having to take a voice line with ADSL, i use my cell phone already and did not want voice, but had to take voice monthly and the installation to just get the ADSL i want, surely they are not to stupid to install the copper line and jsut block the voice frequency, hmm like what they seu to do with ADSL blocking that frequence on normal voice lines.

georgelza, this is a point I've brought up too. I only have a phoneline because I'm forced by Telkom to have one because I need ADSL. If I had a choice, I would not have a landline. Pretty much like us having to have a television licence even if we don't watch SABC TV stations. It's totally ridiculous.
Mad,

I take that back, let me rephrase that. I did not intend to knock Hellkom, but it has been proven time and again (in this same thread for that matter) that there are different answers for each and every Telkom orc. The fact that you are reporting on one of those responses that you received via email if fine, but it does not make it true. I doubt Telkom actually knows what is true at this stage either, but to use Hellkom as the 'definative' answer is not correct. In fact, you were adament about putting the info up and letting Telkom correct you if the info is wrong. Fat chance that will happen...

See my point?

OK apologies for going off then... that reply is from Tech support but I think will have to contact someone higher up who can issue official responses. Everything on Hellkom is as accurate as possible. Still dunno what you meant by sensationalist though.

Thing is, one wonders who actually *does* know..? Eish.. one wonders if a call to 0800 DSL DSL will sort it?

I subcribe to the theory that they really haven't decided yet and don't know. I think that they will see how many users they get, what the usage is like etc. and then decide what to do.

Who else tests their new products on their customers straight from the Engineering Division?
Imagine working in the Telkom New Products and Services Department and reading about new product launches in the media before receiving it from your own department. No wonder the Helldesk people didn't know what was cutting.[8]

Can I add some fuel to the fire?

I phoned last tuesday to have my 512k line converted.
Was given an order number and assured the conversion would be done in 24 hours.
On Friday I phone and ask WTF?
They tell me it will be escalated and I WILL be called back in 2 hours.
I still havnt heard a jot and I'm phoning now ... again.
